Bernie Sanders:

And people are asking: How does it happen that a political party which wants to give tax breaks to billionaires, which nobody supports; which wants to cut programs for working people; wants to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; many of whose members do not even believe in the reality of climate change – how in God’s name do these guys win elections? Well, the Democratic leadership of today hasn’t figured this out. It is time for profound change. ...
----------------------------

I think he kinda nails it on the head...these folks in middle America are voting for people that would give tax breaks for the wealthy, cut social programs that help them, as well as other government funded retirement and health programs designed to help them. It truly does beg the question...why would they vote for them?
Why would they vote for them? Because they know some form of that programme has/will be rolled out under a Democratic administration under Clinton and so they went for the other lot who reflect their own identity politics of an America where white Christians are more obviously in charge and their fear of Hispanics and Muslims are stroked.

The Clintons have only themselves to blame for not letting Governor Casey deliver a pro-life speech (at that time it was fairly normal within Democratic circles) at the Convention in 1992 and pushing anyone with pro-life sentiments out of the party. There are many voters who held their nose and voted for Trump because Clinton is so extreme with her support of the truly horrific practice of partial-birth abortion. This is a major issue for many people in this country especially in areas where the Democrats ceded ground. Support for the widespread legalized abortion we have today and partial-birth abortion are declining

Not that Gallup isn't flawless but their data would suggest otherwise.

So it is racially and religiously motivated in your opinion?

I couldn't disagree with you more. Unless you're polling in Christian communities of course... where I'm sure you'll find like minded individuals.

A woman's right to decide what happens to her body is one of the few things I'd take to the street to protect. Until a man can take over her pregnancy, it's upto a woman to decide. Check your facts on "partial birth" abortions (emotive political term) and see how few of those procedures are carried out and in what circumstances. In fact over the Obama presidency the number of all terminations went down.

And maybe if there was FREE birth control and the morning after pill there'd be even less.

I cant see what's in it materially for them. They surely know in their heart of hearts that Trump cant change the fortunes of American manufacturing industry. So, yeah, I see it as down to identity. Not necessarily a strident racism, more a fear of a nation becoming less white and Christian and the need to draw a line under that process. I think that's the package they were sold on.

I just wish people would just be honest like this.

And/or maybe just they rejected a poorer alternative candidate?
