I know I’ve said this before but can you imagine if two of may’s staff were arrested and charged with money laundering all the rest and acting as a foreign agent whilst another pleaded guilty to lying over contact with Russia ?
Cameron obviously had to deal with coulson but this is clearly at a completely different level .
Yep. This is a not a modern, decent, civilised country, like anywhere in Europe or the Pacific Rim. It's the United States.
So although what we already know should and already would be utterly devastating anywhere else, here it doesn't mean very much yet. "Collusion" in the sense used by the media and popularly understood is not a crime, and it will likely take actual, demonstrable criminal wrongdoing by the President himself to turn the balance in Congress. Even if each and every one of Trump's team is charged, the politics don't automatically change. As Jeff Flake, down 25% in the polls shows, Americans
loathe the Republican Party, which astonishingly even now arguably needs Trump more than he needs them.
But, one the other hand, it is a virtual certainty that Trump
is a criminal - not so much because of the Russian election angle, but in his dealings with people like Felix Sater, or his deals with Azerbaijan and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. There are indications that Mueller is focusing on this as much as on Russia (and on Jared selling US visas to billionaire Chinese to fund his failing real estate vanity projects - there's so much to choose from nobody can even remember it all) and if that's correct, these are more likely to be what does it for him.
Of course,
Timothy O'Brien and
Adam Davidson among many others have also documented all this long ago, but because, as I mentioned, this is America, the
liberal media excuse me #hashtag resistance often prefers
wallowing in paranoid Manchurian Candidate-style conspiracies to raising awareness and explaining any of this, it's all still obscure.
on another note, Manafort's tax evasion/money-laundering scheme was entirely routine -
the Treasury estimates that 30% of high end New York real estate sales are made solely to facilitate money laundering, which is part of why nobody who works for a living can afford a house anymore.
In America, you literally have to be caught colluding with a hostile government to manipulate the Presidential election before you're at risk of being charged for white-collar crime. And it's a near certainty none of Trump's blatant fraud and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act would have attracted the slightest concern from the authorities, had he just kept to race-baiting on twitter instead of entering politics.
