I just hope when the wheels fall off these western populist movements the damage done is repairable.

I'd feel a little less uneasy if the Democrats controlled the House / Senate or Supreme Court but every one is or will soon be in Republican hands. Terrorfying.

In 2016, the American political landscape has been transformed. Few saw it coming. But did President Obama? A look back at one of the most notorious moments of his 2008 campaign, when then-candidate Obama was recorded giving his evaluation of voters in middle Pennsylvania to donors in San Francisco, suggests he did:

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

This speech is usually remembered for a single remark—often summed up in shorthand as the “bitter clingers” moment—that provided an early, candid example of Obama’s estrangement from Jacksonian middle America. But read in context, it’s more than that—and kind of stunning. There are few Trump supporters who would disagree with Obama’s first paragraph; there are few Trump opponents who wouldn’t call the second prescient. But while this kind of analysis now seems common, at the time it was not.

In 2008, few pundits perceived the deep, structural economic and social distress afflicting the white working class. Almost no one at the time in the GOP saw the chasm that was opening between the Jacksonians and the establishment of the party—that, as Obama noted, Bush would be lumped in wholesale with Clinton as an example of failed establishment politicians.

The people are beginning to sing against the false song of globalism. It really is a movement across the entire West.

Is that the same Raheem Kaseem who couldn't even follow up on his bid for the leadership of UKIP, posted a series of obscene misogynist tweets, and would like ex BNP members to be allowed to join UKIP ? Excuse me if I pass by on the other side.

Here are some of my thoughts on all this. Full disclosure, I live in VA (which went to Clinton) and voted for Gary Johnson as I couldnt justify voting for clinton or trump. I knew he wasn't going to win but I'm tired of "voting for the lesser evil". We will never get out of that cycle until everyone stops labeling themselves as a member of one party and refusing to see each others perspective. Neither a Republican,Democratic, nor any other party platform will ever be right for all the issues in this country. We need to find ways to comprimise on the issues and find nuanced solutions to all the many complex problems in this country.

We also need to stop generalizing everyone and everything (this goes to everyone no matter what your views are). There are good and bad people everywhere in the world in every walk of life. Not every Muslim is a terrorist, not every immigrant is a criminal, not every white person is a racist. Now are there some members of each "demographic" that deserves these labels? Of course but not due to their religion, national orgin or skin color but by their actions and behavior. It's not where we are from or how we look that determines what we are but our choices and behavior

Well said. I think the biggest point of frustration amongst those protesting the results is that Trump ran on a platform of lies and hate.

I think they have every right to do so, as that is NOT what this country is about. We are a nation of immigrants from all over the world that at one point or another came here to live the American Dream...just as Trump's family did. His grandfather is a German immigrant who had to lay low in this country during WWI after living that dream in Seattle and then New York...I guarantee his grandfather would be cringing at the way he's demonized the Muslims and Mexicans.

The divisive nature of this campaign would have led to protests on either side who lost though. Both sides are at fault, and the rift just continues to grow wider. He himself was calling for marches on the White House when he thought that Romney was going to win the popular vote in 2012 (which wasn't really even close at the end)...well the Dems are just following through with what he called for.

After the last several months...and years really...Trump is going to have to do something which I don't think he is capable of...reach out to those who oppose him and hug it out and figure it out. He's a bully by nature...I do not believe he can change that. He's now stuck in the uncomfortable position of actually negotiating instead of just suing those he doesn't agree with.

The bolded bit is all I care about. I was not adovacting for Trump nor against protestors. However they should be peaceful protests (some are, some aren't). In Richmond VA, VCU students started walking on to the interstate and blocking traffic at night. That's not productive in anyway no matter who is doing it.

Both sides are too combative and entrenched in an us vs them narrative and seemingly not interested in working together and comprimising. i'm referring to everyday people with this statement, not the politicans(Sanders has said he wants to work together for deals to help american workers and Obama has asked for a peaceful transition).

Wonderful

Did I hear right...did Obama actually ban national anthem singing in sporting events with executive order? That cant be right! Right?

Well if that is true theres one order that surely will be over turned right away.
