How come he's never been properly grilled in any interviews or anything? Theresa May would get dog's abuse from all sides if she dodged taking an interview with Marr etc.

Pretty much a British thing, Presidents of all stripes get softball questions and often retreat to friendly media and they don't even have a weekly Question time to get grilled. McCain proposed it during his run and one of his few proposals I endorsed unequivocally!

To be fair I find PMQ to be intensely embarrassing, however the fact that a president can avoid awkward questioning is utterly insane

Used to think the same myself, that it was just grandstanding, but then I moved to the US and realised that (probably because the office of the presidency also combines head of state) there was an established deference to the holders of the position and they had a build in ability to avoid tricky questions for long periods if they wanted to - I don't think that healthy even for the ones I support.

Of course it is sonewhat balanced by the frequency of voting, a president can avoid taking questions but eventually it and its subject becomes so obvious that it can turn voters off and they punish his party, but that seems a bit of a sledgehammer approach.
