This is a bit of an old fashioned way of looking at the electorate but thanks nonetheless for your input. US Presidential elections are primarily won or lost by bringing out your base voter and winning them by big enough margins. Very few true independents or swing voters out there. Some may be shy with pollsters in who they are inclined to vote for but deep down they'll be leaning one way or the other.

'don't want to vote for either' and 'will not vote for either' are two entirely different things. Of that 1/5th you cite the vast majority will still end up voting. The clue is in the name pollsters give them 'likely voters'.
