Wish deliberate tax fraud was punished far more severely overall - the disconnect between the punishment for say stealing a car vs embezzlement of millions of dollars is vast.

But surely this fine is on top of also having to actually pay the back taxes, right? The article didn’t specify, but describing it as a “fine”, as opposed to “setting their tax debt for $1.6M” makes it seem as if this fine is in addition to, rather than in lieu of, the actual money owed.
Even still, a 7% penalty seems low. I doubt your average Joe gets off with such a small percentage.
I'm sure there's a way to write that off next years taxes.
