I mean why did he say it privately if he was worried, he should really have gone public about it.
I'm guessing he'd lose his whitehouse press credentials the minute he questioned anything the administration does.
This is not his fault. It's the fault of the administration that creates such an environment.

Our leadership combined with our crazy healthcare system leads to a perfect sh*tstorm.

It was widespread knowledge that the White House was not practicing social distancing in media briefings or following isolation practices if had been exposed to a confirmed patient.

Trump for instance on March 14th having a press conference with a bunch of executives tightly packed round a podium and then shaking their hands after he had only recently been sitting next to a Brazilian confirmed with the disease.

Can’t the president order them to do so through the defense production act?

The US president always was capricious and vengeful, but now that character flaw is a matter of life and death. State governors are crying out for federal help, not for themselves but for the people they represent: the nurses and doctors who need protective equipment and testing kits, the patients who need ventilators. But instead of leaping to their aid, Trump tells the governors it’s their responsibility, even though they have a fraction of the procurement power of the US government – adding that if they want help, they’d better grovel. ‘It’s a two-way street,’ Trump said this week. ‘They have to treat us well.’ Even when lives are on the line, his ego with its paper-thin skin comes first.

The last time the US accused a head of state of 'narco-terrorism', Manuel Noriega of Panama, it led to an illegal invasion by US troops.
