Susan Rice highlighted the problem quite well.

Bolton shouldn’t be anywhere near that job, and ran it as a solo endeavour for his own agenda rather than being a “co-ordinator” of various experts... but even if you has the best person in the job, running the absolute best possible process, it doesn’t matter when you’ve got a President who is allergic to facts, expertise and advice.

You could argue that Trump’s traits actually alleviated some of the danger that Bolton could probably cause in a more “normal” administration, but at the end of the day

1) he hired him in the first place
And
2) he just replaced those dangers with a different and equally worrying set.

I disagree slightly - in foreign relations, uncertainty is almost always more dangerous even than having someone like Bolton in there. Yes, he is (was) a warmongering scumbag but at least Iran / North Korea / everyone else can plan accordingly, they can use rational means to predict the US response to a hypothetical act and this helps to prevent crazy talk.

Trump on the other hand actively promotes uncertainty - look at his handling of Iran for instance, where he has first faffed for months about with ending the Obama deal, then threatened his own allies to try and get them to drop it, then dropped it, then threatened his allies again when they didn't drop it, threatened war when they were accused of attacking tankers, then threatened to strike Iran after they shot down a US drone but didn't do it, then did nothing when they started pinching ships, then did (effectively) nothing when we pinched an Iranian ship (on their say-so, apparently) and let it go, then said he was going to talk to Rouhani without conditions - after saying he tried to talk to the Taliban, who the US have been fighting at great expense for nearly 20 years.

I doubt anyone in Iran knows what is going to happen next, which means their careful management of diplomacy - the threats, the limited military action, the internal hostage taking of dual nationals etc - gets replaced by people guessing whether or not he is going to do something this time. Sooner or later someone will persuade the rest that he won't possibly do anything if they do X, and they will be badly wrong.
