Surprised that sprinklers aren’t mandatory in such a building, sad that there was a sad outcome but glad that there wasn’t further loss of life.
I read the building was built before sprinklers were required in residential areas.
When a law did pass, older buildings where grandfathered in. I think if major renovations are done, then they have to be upgraded to meet new standards.
Edit: I should add that Trump was very active in opposing the law, especially retrofitting sprinklers
