2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

He’s definitely a better player than many, including myself, gave him credit for when he was at Burnley.

As for Calvert-Lewin, I’ve never rated him but he did have certain qualities that made him very useful and why managers like Silva and Ancelotti where loathe to drop him. I believe those qualities are long, long gone as a result of his injuries and there is very little left that is worth persisting with by way of a new contract.

No surprise that he had his best season with Richarlison playing off him. He'd have been a lot better playing in the 80's/90's with an out and out goalscorer or creative striker alongside him.

Carlo basically set the team up to get the absolute most out of him, only problem with that was that by xmas everybody had worked out that it was easy to outnumber us in midfield.

Glad we didn’t have to take that chance thanks to DCL.

Burnley ultimately lost, but if we had lost to palace, they would have just needed a point to stay up on the final day which then changes their approach to the game etc etc.

So he has my thanks for that. In the same vein people thank Doucoure for keeping us up.

You could say that if we lost then we wouldn’t have put out half a team against Arsenal on the final day and could’ve pulled a shock result out of our arses. Burnley needed a result regardless of our position, if they’d beaten Newcastle then they would’ve stayed up ahead of Leeds whether we won or lost. Burnley’s task would’ve been no different.

I hear what you're saying Mike, but is there not a chance that that comeback was an absolute hammer blow to their hopes and confidence of staying up?

I don’t think he and Richarlison were particularly effective together to be honest, both were far more effective at getting on the end of things rather than ‘doing things with the ball’ and meant they often got in each other’s way. I think the other creative outlets in the side were the main reason for DCL’s purple patch.

I definitely agree with how badly we got worked out in that season though. Some of those games towards the end of that season when we were in such a strong position to reach the Champions League was up there with the biggest load tripe I’ve seen from an Everton team. Carlo probably had his bags packed long before that season ended.

That game was the 19th of May. Up until then he'd scored 1 goal from open play all season. 15 starts.
Maybe if he and others had performed just a tiny bit better in the previous 9 months we wouldnt be needing them to turn up and "save" the club.
I suppose it is a Point of view. I'd never say either of them saved the club. They both contributed massively to being there in the first place.

It shouldn’t have been, because they would’ve stayed up anyway if they’d beaten Newcastle at home.

Well they won 7 games that season. They drew 14. I'd say they'd have fancied their chances of snatching a draw a lot more than they had belief in winning the game.

All if's buts and maybes though, but I think it's far frrom guaranteed we'd have defo survived without beating Palace.

Dom is a bit of a personal hero of mine, so I won't have anyone slagging him off. He's been an inspiration to me and genuinely changed my life.

Since watching the master, I often call in sick and do very little at work, a few tasks completed here and there, but when it's near the end of the year and s**t is about to hit the fan. I pop up, sort the issue and I'm lauded a hero. Thank you Dominic.
