2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

I think people forget that footballers are just normal people doing a job, just because they get paid what they do doesn’t open them up to abuse or make them any less human. I think it’s probably best for Dom to move on for his sake and ours but I don’t think all the abuse is fair. he’s never not wanted to succeed here, he’s never not cared. And what he’s done with talking about his mental health is brave and if it allows one person to reach out for help then thank god for it. I absolutely hate the term ‘old school’ it’s normally used as an excuse for being a proper bell end.

The issue is, he feels his contribution is far greater than what it has been and clearly seems he feels he is bigger than the club.

This recent interview (mental health issues aside), the Instagram post the last Goodison game followed by his mrs instagram posts, the fact he downed tools last summer when he was expecting his big move and refusal of signing a contract.

Good luck to him wherever he ends up, but I would be heavily surprised if many teams come in for him and there will be no-one from the top half of the table at least.

It is time for both parties to move on!
Think it all stems from the need to be loved by the fans, or the feeling of having to be accepted.

People like Ashley Young got it, or understood it. (probably a main factor of him playing at the top level for so long) Your never going to get the credit or love you feel you deserve if you are searching or in need of it constantly

Its easy to say he should be confident and satisfied with his contribution (he's scored winners to keep us up, derby goals, played for England etc etc), and from what you hear from him in his academy days he's worked very hard to get were he is.

But he needs to do it for himself and himself only, Lukaku never needed the number 9 to feel validated as the main Everton Centre forward, as much as Dom talks about how privileged he is to wear that number etc..........again its another cry for him to be loved, which i think stems from Duncan mentoring him, his goal record is better than Dunc's but its not just Duncan's on the pitch stuff that has had him idolized.

He had an 18 month purple patch similar to what Bamford had at Leeds and Solanke had at Bournemouth, but i think he would be much happier and secure in himself if he moved on to somewhere were he can feel comfortable in himself and football isn't as 'important' to him. I think going abroad would be the best thing for him to do.

The worry for me with his next move is that as he's signing on a free he'll probably be one of the higher earners at the club which brings pressure. Possibly signing for a club who's fans have been crying out for a goalscoring number 9 which brings pressure. Uprooting his young family etc. Fans are fickle and if he doesn't perform he'll likely feel their wrath and whilst he might not have had the adoration he feels he should have at Everton, the Villa away incident aside, he hasn't been hated.

LAFC or LA Galaxy a nice pad on the California coast

Miami FC, could take his kid to Disney World on his days off?

well said mate. I dont think he ever wakes up and says I aim to have a crap game or miss a few chances on purpose. I wonder if he has suffered from all our change of managers. Carlo clearly brought our the best of him. Even this year he works hard holds the ball up well. I believe better than most. He is constantly being asked to perform different roles. If he stays I will back him. If he leaves hope he does well...........apart from against us!

Honestly, I feel for the lad because he has problems, and hopefully he can work through them. However he now seems to be a peripheral figure for the last season or so and whilst he does seem to play well and add something to the team when he comes in, it's not enough for me to want him to stay around - if he was playing for another PL team and was on a free, I wouldn't want him. Best thing is for all parties to part ways.

A lot of people on here taking a lot of offence to people saying that 'man in job were you need to be mentally strong to survive, is not mentally strong enough for the standard'

Mentality is a huge part of why you make it at the top level, mentality is part of your mental health. It sounds ruthless but you need care less than Dom to survive at this level.

Seems like a lovely, well brought up lad, who despite what others have said, has worked his socks off though

You seem to be confusing poor mental health with a lack of mental strength, mate. I doubt you'd instruct someone with a chronic physical ailment to just bust out a few pull-ups? Yet apparently a young lad who has entertained thoughts of taking his own life somehow did so because he failed to exhibit the requisite strength?!

Anyone who makes it to this level has exhibited consistent mental strength to make the sacrifices necessary for young people to progress. Going public with his struggles in an attempt to help others as well as further his own rehabilitation shows enormous mental strength.

Personally, I think you've churned out a horrible take and, rather than admit you misspoke you saw fit to double/triple/quadruple down.

As for his future, I remain convinced there's a useful player in there somewhere. All it seemingly took for him to embark on the purplest patch of his career was a new manager with clear instructions on how they wanted him to play. Moyes could conceivably do something similar. What does seem clear to me is that his body can't stand up to being first-choice for 38 games a season, so for me I would like to see us keep him around on the understand he is in a fight for the shirt, either with Beto if Moyes fancies him to kick on yet further, or A.N. Other and we flog Big Bets.

No. People are getting a little troubled by your insinuation that people with "real" mental troubles don't talk about it on podcasts. This is, at best, a wildly uninformed and ignorant take.

You prefaced one of your earlier posts on the topic with "I don't know if its me being a bit old school or what", so I'm inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt in not having an informed opinion on a subject such as mental health.
An attitude of "if you're going to get depressed while being a well-payed premier league footballer, then being a well-payed premier league footballer isn't for you" is a hugely oversimplified reaction to a very real issue that can affect anyone.

No, having mind that is free from mental health problems....unfortunately is what clubs want and need at this level of football.
Mental strength is not a real thing, mental health is.

I fear you hear the term 'mental health' and lap it up. Sugar coat it and actually are a crutch for it, when it needs discussing PROPERLY, by professionals and not by an F1 commentator, a footballer or the CEO of HUEL.

Everybody's mental health journey is different and for you to box it into a singular is incorrect.

Its like when people say 'you can fight cancer' you cant! You can get lucky or unlucky, you have no control of it.
