Southgate bottled it against Italy, tactically out manoeuvred by Mancini. The second half was flat and lacked any spark.
Just adding DCLs pace and power would of pushed the italian defence back 10yards and taken the pressure off. The threat of Pickfords quick balls down the pitch (not always successfully) would of really tested their older back line.
Why didn’t he do that? Not sure.
DCL was the obvious answer to stretch the game for England and he takes a proper penalty.

I’m not you can say it would of made ‘no difference’.
Italy had possession because there was no out ball for England, that’s the point, to change the game, not carry on as before.

They need to be in possession to play an out ball though… they bottled it and sat 10 men behind the ball on the edge of their own box

Well with the 10% possession you said that they had, they could of tried that, that in turn might of generated more possession in the Italian half and created more chances and thereby increasing the percentage during the game.
As it was the final it would of been good to try something different.
Not every team is good enough to get so far in the tournament this may of changed the outcome.
