Dominic Calvert-Lewin watch

Think its fairly certain. Same with Doucoure.

Also take into consideration Newcastle backed off from him due to wages and not being able to shift Wilson in time.
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if his ask when he spoke to us in June was much higher than what he eventually had to settle for with Leeds.

The Champions League interest he expected didn't manifest beyond Fenerbahce which he wasn't keen on.

He probably lowered his ask in August and worked a deal out with Leeds because at the time it became clear everyone else was going in a different direction.

Ultimately it came down to us refusing to engage with a lad that spent 18 months rejecting contract offers until he had a sudden change of heart a month before it expired when we had already planned to move on.

He turned us down MANY times. I don't blame the club for refusing to be dealt with like that. How many times should the club be trying to engage with him when he had repeatedly made clear he didn't want to know???

He turned down a contract in July 2024, he turned another one down before Christmas 2024. That's at least twice he jibbed us off.

We don't know what difference there was between any offer we made that he rejected and what he eventually decided to accept at the end of the window with Leeds.

Apparently he was making 100,000 a week here which is what he took from Leeds. I highly doubt we told him to take a pay cut on that on any of those offers especially when we were the ones DESPERATE to get him to sign.
Some good points there tbf

Hes 28 and was looking for his last big contract. Dont blame him. Played the waiting game and Leeds came in - im sure i read an article that said it was a "gamble" they were willing to take (alluding to the cost), and so far it's panning out.

But the club is right to not start paying silly money to players not worth it like we have in the past and especially with his injury record.

I don't blame him for any of it. He did what was right by him but ultimately a lot of the responsibility for him leaving comes down to his decisions. He chose to turn down contracts, he chose to only take negotiations seriously with the club in his last month when we were already forced to plan for a future without him.

I think Beto’s purple patch gave us the ultimately false confidence that we could tick along with goals from him while we got a new lad up to speed.

At this point, every aspect of the decision has gone about as badly as it could have done from our POV, but I’m not mad we did it. Without knowing the ins and outs of what was offered, turned down, etc, it felt like DCL moving on was best. I genuinely don’t believe he does here what he’s doing there if he’d stayed, and instead we’d all be in here cryarsing about not signing the exciting, young French lad from Villarreal.

Just Everton, innit?
