Do we make our money by buying low and selling high?

I'm struggling to get my head around your numbers. You say the academy has made us 50 odd million and recouping sales 30 odd?. That's 80m ish.

But we spent 187m? and we recouped 177m. Where's the rest of the cash come from and where did it go?

For me sell on value is important. The club has no real assets other than it's players these days. In a crisis we've always been able to realize one of those assets and keep us above water. It could be disastrous for us to go back to the situation Moyes walked into with an ageing squad.

Again this season we won't spend anything of note until we sell. If two big assets go and we don't create new ones we lose our insurance policies.

Probably 'make our money' is the wrong phrase but recycling players to keep the squad fresh, of decent numbers and talented is the best way to put it.

We made 177 million from selling players.

50 odd was from selling academy players, 40 odd from selling players for a profit and 80 million from selling players for a loss.

So ignoring the academy.

We've spent 187 million and sold players we've bought for 120 million. (And our current squad cost us about 70 million to assemble.)

Cahill is a great example cost 1.5, sold him for 0.9. But got years of service from him.

What we should be looking for is loyalty more then sell on value.

How does that effect the club over the medium term if the majority happened to be Distin style transfers? I think we need to take more than that into account myself.

The age of the squad is a big deal, sure.

But again there's 20 million up for grabs per year in terms of prize money, by reaching a cup final, playing in europe and finishing 5th (as opposed to doing none and finishing 17th).

That's a bigger source of money than most player sales. Short term gain isn't to be discounted.

That's a good point. Not really how I look at the game for us as we've been so used to the (forced) slow build of a team.
