Discrimination in the game

not sure this is the right thread for this, but thought this was a very good article and Ferdinand makes an awful lot of sense:

Its an odd one. The movement was initially to support the black lives matter movement, which is against institutionalised racism of the US police. As is usually the case, so many other organisations get involved that the original message is lost.

Muslims in the UK, have it worse than the blacks. Attack on mosques, racist far-right groups promoting hatred and all around animosity since the turn of the century, simply because of their beliefs. Muslims are far less likely to get hired for a position, compared to a black or a white name.
Asians, make up a good 5% of the entire English population, yet not a single Asian footballer in the English football division. At least, blacks have a sizable chunk of celebrities and voice on the media platform to vouch for their community. What do Muslims and Asians have? Zilch. If the FA cared so much about racism and equality, then why have they done ZERO to address any of the issues I've brought up? Black Lives Matter isn't about fighting racism or inequality. BLM isn't about anti-racism, if it only focusses on one group, yet conveniently leaves out all the other minorities facing adversity in this country. The UK ought to address some of this matter, at least in France and Germany, the North Africans and Turks are thriving in football respectively.

Can't believe you've forgotten Neil Etheridge mate.

Seriously though, you aren't wrong in that discrimination takes many forms.

As said, it’s a societal issue and as a Middle aged white male I’m obviously well placed to comment, but while discrimination and abuse appears to be far less than it was 20 or 30 (or more) years ago, it is still prevalent and the divisiveness of the last half dozen years of politics here and in the US are making it go in the wrong direction.

it’s good that people feel more able to raise their voice as victims and that people are willing to raise their voice on behalf of those they see as victims, but I am not at all surprised that incidents have increased in the last couple of years when the open racism you see online daily has grown and been emboldened by political rhetoric.

I’m not sure how I feel about the knee before matches here. It’s not a bad thing to put the message of anti racism in front of people’s faces here every few days, but it no longer feels like it has much of a message attached.

I watch a lot of NFL, and the taking of the knee there had such an impact not because of the act but because of the timing of it.

it was a sign of protest, during the national anthem. We don’t have that ritual here, so the protest feels limited and so does the impact.

that said, if it makes any members of a minority group feel better about their place in the game and in society, then good.

The chancellor of the exchequer, the mayor of London and a very good representation in politics and the professions. Not to mention her from bake off.

But does it? I think this is part of the point QPR make, it has no impact now as it's at every game, it did first time just not now, its just part of the start of the game

Slightly different, but Warrington RL announced 2 weeks ago that their players would be taking the knee before games and tweets and facebook comments from the fans were, erm, discouraging. I was, frankly, shocked.

I'm not saying its going to cure racial discrimination or anything, but some people could do with having the issue shoved in their face.

Some really good write ups about racism at this club

From 2000: The Guardian

From 2001: The Telegraph

This club has a very dark history when it comes to race, so to see some on here critiquing the blacks lives matter movement was absolutely disgusting.

I was going to post about my experience at Windsor Park (as a Catholic) but tbh I feel it pales into insignificance.

We gotta start calling people out, publicly, in front of their face, to discuss the issues if and when they arise.family, friends, fans, co workers, strangers. Good luck, people have wanted to fight me before when i've tried this though. Also seems to be a quick way of being ostracised, so perhaps not the best way to go about things, but we gotta say, SOMETHING!, keeping quiet does not work. It's like, one of these things where you think, 'should we not be a bit farther along than this?' This is still happening, maybe even increasing. Propaganda by the elites has much to answer for. anyone thinking along racist lines nowadays, well, get educated(not education in the school system sense).

I think we'll skip the racism lesson from a lad who still boos Evra and wears this t-shirt to bed

Your point on the whole is valid and well made. Islamaphobia has always been present but obviously exploded after the WTC attacks and subsequents wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lybia and Syria.
However, with regards to football, unless the demographic has changed in the last 3 decades (I've lived in Spain since 1993), the majority of Muslims and Asians in Britain are of Indian and Pakistani origin. Two countries where cricket is much more popular than football (and there seems to be a welcome presence in cricket). Whereas, in France and Germany, the Islamic poulation tends to be, as you point out, of North African and Turkish origin. Countries where football is very popular.
One thing doesn't change another though and we must fight to eradicate all racism.
