April fools!
Poll time! April fools is the worst right? At best it's a day for people with a horrible sense of humour to pretend they are funny. At worst it creates a tiresome string of "stories" which neither fool anyone nor make anyone laugh.
Job One: Actually fool someone! I always liked Charlie Brooker's story about how when he was showing people around London he'd often very casually remark "... oh and that's where Sherlock Holmes is buried." A lot of the people would get excited and want to see. That's a prank because someone is actually made to be a bit of a fool and you can laugh at them. If you throw a pie in someone's face (or a similar prank) they aren't a fool ... you are just a dick. If you post a story nobody believes and instantly dismiss as an April fools prank then nobody is a fool (aside from maybe you).
Job Two: Be funny. Subjective sure but put some effort in. The key that 99% of people seem to miss is you want the person to be a bit of a fool for believing it.
Job Three: If your prank fails don't fall back on the "oh lighten up everyone ... have a sense of humour ... I'm just having a laugh." If it didn't work it's not our fault.
OR ... should I just lighten up and have a sense of humour because people are just having a laugh?
