Depth of our squad

Precisely...next summer is key with the out of contract players, which is why it was important to pad out the squad this summer i think.

The big mistake was not selling Naismith or McGeady as its not easy to sell next summer with so many players leaving already.

As for the squad depth of GOOD players i think it looks like this myself using the current system:

GK --

LB -- Baines / Garbutt
LCB -- Jagielka / Mori / Galloway
RCB -- Stones / Browning
RB -- Coleman / Holgate

DM -- McCarthy /Besic
CM -- Cleverley
AM - Barkley

LW -- Mirallas
CF -- Lukaku / Leandro
RW --Deulofeu / Lennon

Goalkeepers needed
Defence we're relatively fine
Midfield we need a playmaker
Attack another winger / forward

So 5/6 players based on this lot going ASAP

Howard
Robles
Hibbert
Oviedo (harsh)
Barry
Gibson
McGeady
Naismith
Osman
Kone
Pienaar

11 players out and 6 good players coming in and we have quality and depth.

The squad needs consolidation. I expect we'll see at least one player leave in January to start clearing out room for next summer.

-24 players need registration this week.
-4 unregistered players will need to be registered next year (Stones, Browning, Deulofeu, plus Garbutt if he doesn't go on loan).
-6 players out of contract after the season (Osman, Oviedo, Gibson, Pienaar, Kone, Hibbert).

That would leave room for only three overage additions, assuming none of those six players gets a new contract.

Mirallas doesn't start? Hmmmm.

Somebody clearly didn't think we'd be able to hold on to him haha

Couldn't see a more appropriate thread so I put this in here: http://www.football-observatory.com/IMG/pdf/mr07_eng.pdf

Recent report from the Football Observatory group concerning what makes for a stable club and well structured squad with future success in mind. Everton scoring pretty high across top European leagues.

Good read that Dave. They show the relative benefit or retaining the likes of Hibbert and Osman whilst recruiting young. Exactly the model we've seen for the past two management regimes. Sociedad being top of that list shows that foe all of his misgivings, Moyes has a sound philosophy.

I was a little less impressed by their rating of Lovren as the highest performing defender in the league last season mind.

Stones doesn't need registering because of his age

I agree with all them outs to be honest although Joel is ok as a back up and I cant see Howard or Barry going anywhere until there contracts expire, plus if we are turning down 8 million for Naismith then cant see him leaving either.
Saying that I wouldn't mind any of them going really

The OP seems like a strange thing to complain about. We have depth in players that we see actually contributing, why is it a problem that we don't have 6 wantaway players who we paid too much for who can't even make the bench like the [Poor language removed] do?

We've had 3 left backs get injured and we're still doing fine.

Such an annoying post, Barry hasn't put a foot wrong all season, we're clearly a much more organized team whenever he plays and he's good at nullifying the creative players on opposing teams (see his performance against Silva). Garbutt is completely unproven and some good corners doesn't change that. Howard is inconsistent but he just single-handedly earned us a clean sheet at Spurs.

I don't understand on what basis you can say Naismith isn't good, but an 18 year old we've just signed from Barnsley who's played a couple U-21 games is "good" enough to contribute. Or that a striker you've never seen play is better than Kone.

You've just condensed all the standard GOT whipping boys into one post, preferring players we've never seen play over them.
