Defensive changes for next season

I can't think of a team to win the premier league who didn't have a centre half who dominates aerially & wins almost every header

Blackburn - hendry
Arsenal - Campbell
Man Utd - Bruce pallister then vidic
Chelsea - terry
City - Kompany
Leicester - Huth Morgan

The truth is the premier league isn't great & once the majority of teams fail with plan A they often simply play lots of high balls into the box.

We can't defend them with current personnel mori & stones perhaps have room for improvement jags seems most likely to never being able to do it.

that's not necessarily a criticism after all it's a partnership & the balance just isn't there.

Look at West Ham they try and play football but once they fail they quickly turn to crosses & long balls into the box & why wouldn't they it works or certainly did against both us & Arsenal.

Its a difficult task finding the right player as they need to have some level of speed & ideally a modicum of footballing ability so yes that crosses shawcross of before anyone mentions him.

It's also why if guardiola sells Kompany & fails to replace him with another dominate centre half city will be able to play all the football they like but they will really struggle to win the league.

Here's my two cents. We need a left-back who can play week-in, week-out so we can move Baines into the Central Midfield position for certain games where he'll get through less running and allow his killer boot to really make an impact. Someone decently young and energetic with a decent cross and the ability to defend and keep it tight, someone like Jonas Hector, 25, good at defending and chipping in a few goals as well. I'd bring in a CB to play along side Stones and build the heart of a defensive unit.

If we're getting De Boer (oi oi), then someone like Joël Veltman would be an absolute shout, good on the ball and a good tackler, 24 as well with title-winning experience at Ajax.

Also, pivotal to a defensive change is a new half-back to play alongside McCarthy, who is a roaming forward-sweeper rather than a disciplined half-back, in the role currently occupied by Gareth Barry. Someone like Saul, 21 from Atletico would do this to good effect, or, further afield, we could attempt to lure Johannes Geis from Schalke. He's the archetypal half-back, strong, good at dictating tempo, able to tackle and able to distribute further up field, he would really stabilise our ball-retention and circulation.

Interesting you mention Jonas Hector, it looks like hes the German 1st choice left back for the forseeable future at still playing at Koln. Looks to be a good all rounder but if we signed him then would you then also move on Baines, Oviedo and Garbutt leaving Galloway and him on the left side?

Geis is another interesting one and still just 22 but would cost a pretty penny from Schalke i think. I agree that what would really help us would be a top notch player just in front of the defence, obviously we couldnt get Busquets and Niguez wouldnt leave Atletico but we would need someone relatively young who would most likely need time to adapt...

The thing is though, we have players coming through who could be ideal at RB like Kenny/Holgate and also LB like Galloway/Connolly who all have different strengths and weaknesses. Should we spend big on full backs now or take a short term 'hit' and try and get these players into the team playing games as much as possible?

Same can be said for the midfield with Ledson/Walsh and others...

Do we bring in say 2 young players for each position and alternate them based on form or do we bring in someone like a Hector and then effectively block their path and cover the position now with quality?

The players mentioned like Hendry,Bruce,Terry and Adams were all great organizers as well as being dominant defenders.

I think when you look at Jagielka, hes lacking in the leadership department on the pitch or just not quite at the top level. With Mori i feel whilst he could prove to be a great player hes also not going to be the Lynchpin of the defence.

I think also having someone as the leader in defence who can dominate headers and organize would really benefit Stones. Manolas of course who we were linked with isnt the tallest but is the key to Roma's defence. Koulibaly at Napoli is a fantastic player but im not sure if he would be vocal enough.

Very hard to find someone like that....

I'd like to see Browning, Stones, Mori and Galloway put together as our defence......Youth, speed and height. Get in a proper defence coach to turn these boys into men......

Im not sure if Browning is going to be good enough. What i think is that in the full back areas we need both an attack and a defence minded option so 2 players for each side. I would be looking first at Browning,Holgate and Kenny on the right to see if they could be ready for next season and also Galloway on the left.

With Stones and Mori as a partnership it looks good on paper but i think we would need a real leader there who can organize the defence during games and dominate.

For the millionth time....Lawrence is NOT our defensive coach.

So a former centre half doesn't offer anything in the way of defensive coaching?

Who does? The former midfielder? former strikers? You are chatting bubbles mate, Lawrence will do some defensive coaching.

The only specialist coach teams have is goalkeeping. So whilst Lawrence's title is not "Defensive Coach" he will most certainly deal with some aspects of defending.

Can't you use some of your voodoo powers to make Martinez start oozing black liquid from the top of his head so he gets freaked out enough to get the defence sorted?

That or set Jordan Henderson's boots on fire or something

Or tap into your other gimmick and ply West Ham with some of Vega's finest before the Semi Final so they're too knackered to play

You're letting the side down here Charles

Why would he? Its a very simplistic way of looking at things.

How the hell am I "chatting bubbles"? he is first team development coach.

Its blaming a bloke for something he Isn't responsible for! Its like saying its Kevin Sheedy's fault we cant take a good set piece. He was deadly at them when he played but that's not his job.

Im too busy pimping out our players to champions league teams...

our defensive block is a real mess. if martinez is about to stay for the next season (which is shocking itself) the only way to improve it is to replece entire defensive line with new defenders unpolluted with martinez and jones philosophy. roborto has no solutian, will never find one

As for Jagielka he is another (after neville) poor, ballless captain. It should have been likes of Barry or even Besić to carry the armband
