If a person comes in your house with a weapon of any kind, it's fair game. And you should be able to do it without any fear of being arrested.

And what Nik said about repeatedly stabbing someone being too excessive, in the heat of the moment, I'm gonna do whatever it takes to keep my family safe.

if someone breaks into my house i'm presuming he (she?) wants to hurt my family, at that point i'm going to make sure he(she) doesnt get up off the floor i'm not talking killing them thats murder, but i am talking broken stuff and a whole world of pain. two things make me violent (which trust me is not pleasant) firstly insults or threats to my family secondly paedos.
i can see the validity of the poll but in this thread the link maybe somewhat tenuous?? lol

All I'm saying is if a burlgar is running away, it is not OK to stab or shoot him in the back. The threat to you has been illiminated so therefore it's just your anger and not fear that has made you do it. Murder. If there IS a threat to you and your family then fair game. You can act out of genuine fear. But I still think repeatedly stabbing/ bludgeoning a burlgar is excessive and could be deemed manslaughter as there would have ben a point where you know he's ****ed but you've carried on. It's all circumstancial.

Yeah i get where your coming from nik i do really. just dont know if i could let someone get away, hard to say as i havent been in that scenario, we can all wax lyrical about how we would react and how incredibly tough we are but when the chips are down///// who knows. i dont know if i could hold my temper.

Yeah defo mate, I'm not saying I could either. I wouldn't morally condemn a person for loosing there temper and killing the person out of anger, I'm just talking about in the eyes of the law here.

There is always alot of talk about "what i would do" first of all you would **** yourself if you heard someone down stairs, then you will get a massive adrenal dump which will stop you thinking properly and you will probably panic!. If you have a family why would you go running down stairs? say there is more than one and you get a bar over the back of your head leaving your wife and kids exposed.

My advise would be make loads of noise whis will spook them and they will flee (they will be full of adrenaline) defend the top of the stairs. this is the best position as they can only come one as a time. if you live in a bugalow try and get your family into one room.
a good alarm should give you time to react and will probably scare them off.

Obviously there are different circumstances and this won't apply to all.

The liberal rehabilitation crowd have a lot to answer for. I'm not advocating dry bread and water, but hard labour and less comforts in prison which would make you think twice before wanting to go back inside.

We follow the Staates by about 20 years, they have gone back to chain gangs as rehabilitation didn't work. How long before we follow suit.?

The problem is that prison as a punishment doesnt work either - in Victorian times hard labour, executions, beatings, unsanitary conditions and whatnot didnt prevent people reoffending (actually executions probably did). The only way in that prison can be demonstrated to work is that it prevents reoffending by seperating the criminal from society, all the fluff about rehabilitation, hard time and that is just fluff, and should really be ignored.

Here's one reason I oppose the death penalty.

I hope the MacPhail family and state of Georgia are happy they got their 'justice' on their scapegoat. I also hope they're comfortable with the fact that whoever did shoot Mark MacPhail is probably still out there today. Absolutely ridiculous.

And perhaps the people on this thread calling for public floggings and executions should go and live in North Korea, Saudi Arabia or Iran, as they're about the only places that still have them.

The thing with punishment and rehabilitation is that different things work for different people and the system dishes out pretty much the same thing to all. There are always going to be people who take the piss. The news only ever reports on the ones that are like, serial reoffenders or whatever so people think prison is a laugh and doesn't work. I've got quite a few mates who've been in prison for various reasons, and they don't ever want to go back, worst thing that ever happened to them. Where are their news stories?

I guess "Man says prison sucks and never wants to go back" doesn't make very good copy.
