Defending set pieces

Not just defending them, we're good attacking them too.

Would be interesting to see what % of our goals came from set pieces this season?

"Coz Pickford is gash from crosses so we try to compensate by putting 5 other keepers next to him, who can only use their heads" Davide Ancelotti

The only worry was that Newcastle found a way around it with Wilson coming shorter to flick it on. That's where zonal can get a bit shaky as teams know we're going to win 9/10 balls into the 6 yard box.
Don't reckon Richarlison would have been picking up Wilson if Godfrey/Holgate had been selected.

Probably because we get battered and pinned back in our box and have to defend for our lives for about 70 minutes per game

Can someone explain why this seems to be working so well.

Our deep defensive line scares me (we’re dropping off on to edge of 6 yard box) but we’re winning everything.

Last night being a perfect example - lots of corners, wide free kicks with good delivery and we won every single header apart from one Olsen tipped over in 1st half.

I always thought high line to give keeper space, mitigate opposition winning header/flick on and potential for offside made more sense.
Because we have giants

....I wondered if we did it to protect Pickford, surely it only takes an opposition player to get to the ball ahead of ours and we’re in trouble. I imagine VAR helps because it notices defenders getting blocked off (the Reds always got away with this).

Moyes was the best, I remember Jagielka saying they were so well drilled we didn’t concede from a set play for two seasons.

Playing to the players strengths. We have a tall team, but our CB pairing of Mina and Keane defo aren’t the quickest and wouldn’t be favourites to chasing any ball in behind.

But the ball coming towards them to attack it, I’d back them to win it 99 times out of 100.
