Dear England

MACCA75

Player Valuation: £70m
Just been watching about the new drama based on the theatre show. It’s about how Gareth Southgate ‘transformed’ the England side, giving them a winning mentality and taking us to the World Cup semi final..

I just can’t believe a single actual football fan could possibly consider him a success. It’s a show about football for non football fans and casual observers.

Thoughts on Southgate’s tenure?

For me he took the best England side in years and got them to play like cowards and flat track bullies with some of the easiest draws we’ve ever had.

I dunno about England, but some reckon he'd be a boss Everton manager.

Anyway, as ever, there's nuance here. We'd frankly massively underperformed in previous tournaments and he did restore a bit of pride. But again, it was a low bar.

As you say, he did have some corking players to choose from and there's the feeling he should have won something.

His biggest impact may have been the culture in and around the squad. Players seemed to enjoy playing for England again. If you think about some of the stories about previous tenure, anyway.

The only way Southgate isn’t a success is if you have an inflated sense of what England should accomplish.

Dont think he would be suited to the day to day running of a club imo, more suited to international.

Think he did a great job with the players, getting them to want to play for their country again. Listened to the Pickford interview with Rooney, saying how he loves the England camps.

2018 was the most enjoyment I’ve had from a tournament since Euro 2004 especially coming off the back of 4 dismal performances under Capello and Hodgson

2020/21 was a bit of a slog in the groups but picked up with the Germany game

2022 was better but we deservedly lost the quarters to France

2024 was completely dismal and the luck finally ran out in the final
