David Unsworth - Temporary Manager

The issue with Unsworth hasnt been that he just hasnt had enough time. The issue is his decisions have been mind boggling foolish. I mean, you come up against the worst team in the league, who has only scored 4 goals, and you play 2 defensive mids, and on top of that tell all of your wingers and everyone else to sit in and soak up pressure?

You give confidence to the one team that has it, and give them the ONE chance, massive ball possession, to score goals. The best defense is a good offense. Playing so deep against a bad team lets them bring up players they wouldnt otherwise, because they would be worried about a counter attack. Instead, they can now pack 6 in the box, which always leads to goals.

I stated something like that in my match post, two points chucked when we should have won easily.

We need a respected, proven, successful and ambitious manager if we are to attract respected, proven, successful and ambitious players.
Enough of this idea that nepotism is our answer. We need to be professional and get the best man out there for the job. Unsy was put in as caretaker, if he was deemed the man for the full job, he would already be installed as such. The fact is, he is not exactly generating any confidence from the fans or the board at the moment, hence the ongoing Silva quest and whoever else they are pursuing.

This basically. Unsworth is a decent bloke, and clearly has a knack with the kids. But managing kids, and going head to head every week against PL managers, is night and day.

His long term value to EFC is with the youngsters, not the first team. And that is in no way a dig at him, just simply my assessment from the last few weeks.

Respected, successfull, proven are attributes we need but sadly most managers in that category are employed at the top level or not willing to stake a reputation built up over time. We have to go for the best of the rest and with that comes the gamble. RK has damaged this club in measures I never thought possible, so for me do we employ Unsworth who knows the club and will improve or gamble on the best of the rest

Also, I think getting very good results with the U23's has given the guy a false sense that he's a natural born quality manager, when in actual fact Everton's academy has produced some excellent players and I think most managers would have similar success.

I agree, he also did a few of the simple things right.
Chose Sig over Rooney, put Niasse in, brought Lennon in to protect our limp right backs etc but he gets the starting line up wrong every game.

I still feel he could warm to the task. He inherited a shambles from a manager who was supposed to be a match for all the other PL managers and we saw how that worked out. He looks to be doing his best to reintegrate all the players Koeman alienated and his lineups have shape, though they aren't exactly purring atm.

I worry more about his long term ability to play the game, so to speak. For the most part, he doesn't have to worry about egos and contracts and money and the like with the U23s, but it's a whole different dimension to senior management that can't be ignored

Its a conundrum, and no mistake. Do the board give him a go, or go all in on frankly, the latest new kid on the block?

Agreed, I don't think we can realistically recruit at the Simone/Ancelotti or perhaps even Tuchel level (yet). Our only hope is to find the right up and coming, moderately experienced, ambitious fella, who is aiming for that level himself. It will be just as it is with the players we can realistically get in. A hit and miss approach, where the throw of a dice might get you the next Simone, or equally the next Mike Walker!!! Glad it's not my decision.

Not gonna lie, he scares me a bit.

He seems competent and hungry. Not exactly a glowing assessment, but we have to roll the dice on the next manager. We can bring in safe hands for the next couple of years and finish 7th all the time, or go for a man who has a bit about him but is relatively unproven. We need to find another Poch really. No idea if Silva is that, but I know Alldardyce and Dyche aren't.

Yep. True dat.

I'm not keen on the idea of Unsworth taking the role full time. However what he has done is steady a sinking ship 'slightly'. We don't look a miles better granted but we do look more organised, hungry and there is that fight there again. He isn't the right man to take us forward in my opinion and i hope this run as manager doesn't tarnish his great work with the u23's!

Europa presser tomorrow is it?

Prepare for round 6 of "David, have you any updates on the manager situation and how would you feel if you where told it was yours till the end of the season" questions.
