2025/26 David Moyes

And Sunderland had half a team away in another continent. I think it's fair to say we've clearly prioritized league over cups for long long time, so I accept and understand it is what it is, but it would be nice to win a trophy instead of throwing a street party because we finished 7th once in a decade.

They had 5 players at AFCON and we had 2 + 8 out injured?!?

What do you suggest we could’ve done to prioritise the FA Cup more than we did?

When was the last time we did that?

We went out the league cup in the second game was it to a team that had about 2 points for half the season, with the manager shrugging his shoulders and all-but-saying "so what who cares". Then we put up no fight whatsoever and went out the FA cup in the first game to a team with 74 players away at AFCON.

I'd love nothing more than this club to go all-out to win a dometic trophy (even if it meant plodding around in 15th-ish place all season), but we don't take cup competitions seriously. I don't recall the last time we did. Everyone hanging their hat on getting Europe and just assuming we'll magically take it seriously and wont go crashing out to whatever team finishes 3rd in the Romanian or Finlandish league.

Thats my point tho, I want us to do better in those competitions and as you say, take them seriously

Going by what I saw of that game, I saw two sides that were not hellbent on winning because both teams fully looked as if they had bigger fish to fry and either team losing the game wouldn't lose any sleep. But like I say, I can understand if both clubs took it as a distraction to the all-important Premier League.

But I say again: when was the last time it honestly felt like this club truly prioritized a cup competition? For me, cup games always seem to come across as a distraction rather than something to be embraced or get excited about. Maybe I'm wrong or maybe that's why we've not opened our trophy case in 30 years.

Lads and ladies.

Are you really this upset that we are sat in 8th with a good chance of Europe?

Do you miss the relegation battles that much?

Bless you.

You prefer to wallow in misery don’t you? Sat here complaining that it’s not perfect for you.

Your lifes frustrations all taken out on the manager of the football club you support.

For me today shows why Moyes isn't the right manager to take us to the next level. He did an amazing job steadying the ship and get us where we are now but this is basically what you get with him.

He knows how to set up a tough-to-break-down team and will get decent results. But he does lack a plan B and furthermore he doesn't know how to set up a positive minded team, who bring the game to the opponent.

I'll be well happy seeing Moysie get a decent contract offer now.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Why?

He's got over 1 year left on his current deal, it's not like Barca or Madrid or Bayern or ManU will be head hunting him. He's done a superb job -so far- but why rush into anything? We all know he isn't going anywhere.

Surely common sense would be to see how we finish the season (the middle section of the league is so compact one result could make the difference between a great 8th place finish or lowly 12th end), and perhaps even see how we look half way through next season.

Seems very odd to me the ownership would be racing into a new contract when there is zero need to do so; unless of course, the mid-ish-table stability with a side order of plucky fight you get with Moyes is exactly what the ownership are happy with, in which case, I can see the logic from their side.

If you had been offered Europa conference league at the start of the season you’d of taken it, especially after the last few years.

Don’t even deny it.

But now he’s close to that, you push the bar out further as you can’t accept that now as progress and you want him to fail.
A top half finish after the last few years should be worthy of great applause, recognition, and the kind of street party this fan base threw after "winning" the last derby 2-2 or that time won the world cup in the 94th minute away at 13th placed Brighton not so long back.

Europa Conf would be ideal for us - assuming this club took it seriously, which who knows if we would.

Mathematics may say we're in with a chance of Champs League, but common sense says thats lunacy. And we'd only embarrass ourselves in such a competition just like we've done every single time we've been in Europe since the 80s.

Walking before we can run might not be the worst thing in the world. Horses for courses and all that.

I'd have taken mid-table without any European qualification whatsoever

Moyes doesn't want European football,,,

I heard Diego Simeone is available at the end of the season tho.
