2024/25 David Moyes

He's part of the recruitment team, if not the most significant.

He's entitled to be unhappy, but broadcasting it in the way he is, is self serving, isn't constructive or helpful.

There's a reason the CEO and club try an manage perception - Moyes is admitting perception is not helping with our efforts, and at the same time he's adding to a negative perception. 'nobody wants to join us, probably because we've been near the bottom for 5 years' 'we need 9 or 10 players *LAUGHS*'
He's part of the recruitment process but I really doubt he is involved in getting deals over the line.

This isn't the demeanor you want from your manager two weeks prior to the start of the season. He looks so downbeat and it's rubbing off on everyone. James Tarkowski gave an interview after the game yesterday and he looks stressed. Can only imagine what it must be like in that dressing room.

Also, being in the US isn't helping anyone and I mean the players when I say this. They're under a strict schedule as it is and I don't think it helps.

I think Moyes hasn't downplayed expectations as such just yet. He's been quoted on a few occasions saying that we should be aiming to crack into Europe. The comments are much clearer digs at the recruitment team to get deals done rather than self-preservation, for me.

That said, I'd be a liar if I said that I'm not just a little worried that him putting all this stuff out there might not be helping the situation.

We will get deals done, just a shame we habitually have to write off August.
The neverending Everton cycle -

Write off August due to lack of signings and a useful pre season.
Sign a few cast offs on deadline day
Lose 5 games out of the first 8
Get firmly rooted to the bottom of the table by October.
Open a winter transfer window thread and put all our hopes on an upturn.
Fail
Sack manager in Jan/Feb

Rinse and repeat

Crying about the bounce of the ball on the new stadium's (recently re-grown) pitch took the biscuit.

I think he's 💩ing bricks that the new place wont hand us the extra points Goodison could always dig out for us and he's a bit unsure about his new surroundings.

That's part of the angst he has over lack of signings.

Then again, as stated above, he hands out messages at the end of last season that money isn't everything: you 'be smart' rather than spend loads.

Words have a habit of coming back to haunt you...

I think he’s bricking it because apart from his stint at United it’s the first place he’s been where he’ll be fired if results aren’t immediately there. He knows how trigger happy this lot are, he probably also knows he wouldn’t have been here if Dyche hadn’t recommended him at a point when the club had no proper football leadership (e.g new owners weren’t listening to Thelwell by this point).

He’s got this one opportunity to make a fast start and keep himself in the job so from that perspective I can see why he wants the best players available.

Tbh I’m all for it. Every manager and player should be coming in every day thinking that their job might be on the line if they don’t perform.

We look very undercooked. Something I feared weeks ago. Pre season, half a squad. Seemingly many avoided being too concerned.

Now everyone well neatly everyone getting panicky. It's seeping through now. Moyes and one or two senior players making comments. Beginning to look a bit of a shambles.

Thing is though...he should be used to this. I dont think he's been at any club where he either got the majority of signings in early, the ones he wanted, or had a bit of an argument with recruitment.

HIs last Everton stint was full of last day/week deals. Sunderland had nothing. West Ham he was fighting the recruitment after they sold Rice for £100mill.

So suck it up IMO.

But i will say we definitely need a right winger/wide attacker with pace, who is a goal scorer. Thats where that Everton Women sale funds should go - £40-50mill.

Dour disappointed desperate Davey is a key part of the transfer team so knows the situation.

He doesn’t need to continually keep ramming it down everyone’s throats, hence why sky are now taking the piss.

The ongoing public bitching about lack of numbers and pace of transfers helps no one but himself tbh.

Frustrating me that we seem to be doing one deal/position at a time tbh, love to see a few double signings happen like we used to do.

Tbh we might have to do doubles!

Time to move onto other targets Everton (please have other targets…..)
Agreed - save the bellyaching for behind the scenes - we’ve got early crisis club written all over us and he’s ratcheting it up ten fold.

That's for enough. But if he wants to help himself his messaging should be a bit more positive concerning the team he manages and their prospects, or why would a player who's not totally convinced of going to Everton sign on the dotted line?

This all goes to my main point on Moyes: he's so in a groove concerning Everton that his default setting is to talk ambitions down - and it's not going to cut it in this new era.

Oh yeah I agree on the messaging. If Dyche had said even half of this stuff then a GOT pitch fork mob would already be formed.

What I want to see is the team that finished last season starting this one in the same vein, not the usual Everton story of players being injured, players taking ages to reach any kind of form or fitness, and ultimately players only showing any form in a season once all pressure has been removed from them whatsoever.

There’s simply no good reason why Pickford, the first choice back 4, Garner Gueye Alcaraz, Ndiaye Barry McNeil, can’t start the season as a very competitive unit.

If we start with 5 at the back, players out of position, and half the back line missing with injury and throw away a handful of games I won’t be pleased and no amount of excuses about transfers will wash with that.

Good point about the stadium. We don't know how long it's going to take to adjust to playing there and whether it gives the opposition a boost. Goodison was always one of those places that got you points.
