2024/25 David Moyes

Couple of points:

1. Why do West Ham fans think they can tell us about Moyes? We know everything to know about him, good, bad or indifferent.

2. He used a sound bite of Moyes saying “I win” and he does more than he loses. Did he expect Moyes to win every game he managed for them?

3. Moyes record in full seasons at West Ham was; 6th, 7th, 14th (won Euro trophy) and 9th. They finished below 50pts once.

4. Where are they since he left? Below us in 16th on 27pts and currently on their 2nd manager of the season.

5. As with us, they’ll look back years later and think “it was actually alright in the grand scheme of things under Moyes”. Because let’s face it, they aren’t getting anywhere near Europe again for a long time, just like we haven’t.

6. This fella, as with all Hammers have delusions of grandeur. They think they’re massive, why? We haven’t won a pot for 30 years and we still have about 10 more major trophies than them. They’ve also been relegated twice in seasons when we finished 7th. Their greatest ever season was 85/86 when they finished 3rd. We finished 2nd and it was seen as a failure. They are nowhere near our level historically.

I said before the season, Moyes reached the ceiling at the table with West Ham, it's a top half to Europe team and he got them there. But they could reach the same with better football.

They invested a bit under him no doubt, but again they invested another 150m this season and do worse. To make a team like West Ham permanent fighting for CL or even the title, they need another few 100m of investment, and they cannot afford it, because of PSR.

Have a guess who has the second best winning percentage for a West Ham manager, yep.

Moyes actually has the best win record of any permanent West Ham manager. Those stats are wrong. Moyes had a 44.59 win percentage for West Ham. Comfortably ahead of Greenwood and Lyall. Potter currently sits at 16.67

Trevor Brooking's win percentage was better but he was temporary., only managing 14 games.

The counterpoint would be he fluffed up his record by reaching the quarter finals or better in three European campaigns. But, again, he had to qualify for Europe in the first place, once by winning the Conference League.

The net spend throughout his tenure was actually pretty low as well. Not sure the exact figure (seen 125M and 215M cited), but regardless it came in at under 50M per season.

They had a big profit on the books due to those European campaigns, but look to have blown the lot.

Viborg x2
FCSB x2
Silkeborg x2
Anderlecht x2
AEK Larnaca x2
Gent x2
AZ Alkmaar x2
Fiorentina x1

Not the Fiorentina of yesteryear. Not Lukaku or even Radzinski's Anderlecht.

I know it works both ways here; I'll forever be hesitant to call West Ham true champions of Europe, and yes, Moyes' European "triumph' is somewhat skewed too. It's what Moyes did for them in the league they should have been grateful for imo. Consistency at its finest.

Well yes, but in season one of Europe they Dinamo Zagreb, Genk, Rapid Wien, Sevilla and Lyon before losing in the semis to eventual Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

Last season in the Europa they beat TSC, Freiberg, Olympiakos and the knocked out Freiberg in the round of 16 before falling to eventual Bundesliga champions Leverkusen. They also gave the latter side a scare by scoring first at home and should really have equalized the tie.

Its certainly good by West Ham standards, given they hardly ever qualify for Europe!

For anyone who doesn’t want to watch that video the graph is % of chances taken vertical and quality of the chances horizontal. We’ve gone from rock bottom this season (to the day after Moyes joined) to top (excluding the Palace result) since Moyes took over
