2024/25 David Moyes

There are those who feel bringing back Moyes was a return to the Kenwright "plucky little Everton" era, but for me (maybe blessed with a little hindsight), that's not the case.
For one, Moyes was hired the first time on Walter Smith's recommendation. Kenwright wanted Megson, if memory serves.
Two, Moyes had no money to spend, realistically, and to field teams that were predominantly defence-first. We did play some nice football at times, but it was the exception, not the rule. I think that's where his "knife to a gunfight" mentality came from, knowing he was financially overmatched. This time, I feel, will be different under owners who have a vastly superior financial wherewithal (provided they use it l).
Third, while I didn't appreciate the way Moyes left us and tried to poach Fellaini and Baines on the cheap, I think his stints at United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham have to have been learning experiences even if they weren't all that successful. He seems more flexible tactically and in terms of personnel (actually playing O'Brien and playing to Beto's strengths are two examples). I understand the overall quality and health of the squad have had a major influence on that, but it would be interesting to see him work with a fully fit and more skillful squad.
Is he the right man to be at the helm when we move to BMD? In my mind, absolutely. Will he be the man to lead us back to glory? Without the millstone that was Kenwright, he just might be.
This. I agree with all of it. No doubt we see Europe in two seasons at the most. David Moyes is quite possibly the best manager right now in all of England, top 5 to 10 in the world. People are just too emotionally tied up on him and who he was to see just how great he’s become. Sometimes every thing you’ve always needed is literally right in front of you.

I said in another thread that anyone can be successful managing Arsenal, the RS, and City. Moyes would be successful there, too. But those three managers couldn’t come close to getting what Moyes has gotten from Everton.

Those other managers just buckle and throw their hands up at the first signs of adversity. City loses Rodri and Pep plummets down the table. Moyes walked into adversity and turned the ship right around.

No way i expected that result yesterday and Dyche would have expected it even less.
With the injury crisis and a hard fought bumming in the Derby he'd have had excuses at the ready.
Moyes had other ideas.
Can't wait for him to have a full squad and a couple of additions.
He'll only be getting berated for not having us in the top 6 next season. I can live with that😅

He won the FA cup the season he came in, then dismantled that squad and I think since then he’s won a charity shield or something.

Spending the money they do they ought to be doing more, horribly enough Slot coming in straight away and having the RS up there kind of shows his whole process thing is [Poor language removed]. He’s had the time and money to buy whatever he wanted but I don’t think Arteta has the ability to identify talent that Moyes does, he's the one buying Havertz and Jesus as their strikers, he seems obsessed with buying players and playing them out of position.

Honestly think he’s a poor manager, despite their league position, that’s come mainly from the big spending.
do they? there’s only a handful of trophies of which city win the majority and liverpool have had a brilliant team and huge spend in that time

arsenal under latter wenger and emery were dying, he rejuvenated them and turned them into a force again

They’ve lot Jesus Havertz Saka Timber White Odegaard all to long term injuries this season. They’ve now also lost Martinelli. Liverpool have had Jota out for a handful of games, that’s it.

Not all of those have been missing that long or at the same time though. Timber has played the majority of the season as has Havertez and whilst Odegaard was out for a while has also been back for ages. Saka, White and maybe Jesus (who wasn’t getting regular starts anyway) are the main ones missing.

Bournemouth for example have played for months with 10 first team players out, Spurs (much as they are Spurs) have had their whole defence be injured most of the season.

Arsenal are one of those teams that are constantly moaning about something, injuries, Refs etc when frankly, given their spending they should be in a position to cope with 5 or 6 injuries over a season.

I was another one that wasn’t particularly delighted at bringing Moyes back to the club. On the one hand, I thought he’ll get more out of the squad than Dyche did and keep us up, he’s a better manager after all, however on the other hand, I had my reservations about whether he was the right choice going forward. Are we going to punt him into touch after the end of the season or midway through the next and we’re back at square one, trying to find yet another manager because he’s not quite what we need, or not working, like we have been doing for the last however many seasons.

I also thought, after the last couple of years of divide between the fans and the board and having divisive managers, Moyes was going to be another manager that wouldn’t bring the fanbase together at a very, very important time in the clubs history.

Happy to be wrong on those counts and he has been, perhaps ironically, a breath of fresh air. The football has been very enjoyable, entertaining and exciting, in testing circumstances. The unity that there is now between fans and players is brilliant to see and we can now look up the table and not be preoccupied with the bottom 3.

This David Moyes feels like a different David Moyes, to the one that was last here in 2013. The way he has spoken about us in his few weeks here, feels different to that in his first stint, less of a ‘knife to a gunfight’, punching above our weight feel and more of a we should be higher and better than this. He seems a more flexible manager this time around. I was pleased when he changed the line up around for the Spurs game, as while the Villa game performance wise was an improvement, the team was a team that Dyche would’ve picked and I doubt the Moyes of old would’ve changed it up after one game. The team news from that game alone gave me more confidence that we’ll be ok for the rest of the season. Since then, well it has been way beyond what I would’ve expected and even allowing for a downturn in form, I don’t think I’ll be have any qualms about him starting next season as our manager, in our new ground.

Hopefully he’ll be able to bring in who he wants in the summer and push us on further. I’ve more faith in him doing so, compared to some of the others we’ve had doing the dealings in the last few years

I've been screaming out for some modern cult heroe/ legend candidates... Duncan, Cahill, Baines, Coleman etc.. since Moyes left nothing.

All of a sudden I am loving certain players and if they keep going they can get to that trajectory. Only here a wet month n all.

We didn't just bring the man back we brought a spirit back.

With the level of spending we have access to going forward, I dont think its unrealistic, difficult for sure, but very much doable.

Forest and Leicester before are the prime examples of how "easy" it is to rise.

Now, they are also prime examples of how fleeting it can be.
‘No doubt we see Europe in two seasons at the most’ is a wildely positive expectation, even if its possible. I hope hes right.

If I had said Europe this year or next, then a fair criticism of my post. But I said two seasons. I think two seasons to see Europe is very reasonable and not wishful thinking. How many matches did we blow or give away this season that was unnecessary? Had we started Jake and Beto and played people in their natural positions with an attacking mentality, we easily should have had four wins in there. So 12 points and a draw has us sitting somewhere between 5 through 7 right now. No way would Moyes ever allow three goals after 80’ to lose.

West Ham finished 16th in 19-20 when Moyes joined halfway through the season. The next year they finished 6th.

This is not to say I expect it, just that it is very possible.

still can’t stand the thought of him back here, but I’m delighted with what he’s done so far, and unbelievably, I’m actually watching the spurs v Utd match as it feels like we have some skin in the game. I can’t recall the last time I watched any football other than Everton
0-0 will do me just fine.

Damn you Moyes.
