I really thought we'd get a result last night before the game, but it became apparent quite quickly how much more quality is in that Villa side compared to ours.
There were promising signs IMO:
- Taking individual errors out of it (Young and
Branthwaite back passes), we looked pretty solid and I can only remember Pickford making 1x save of note relatively early in the first half, even if we had to soak up some pressure/get some last ditch blocks in.
- We looked to work the ball into dangerous positions, rather than relying on route 1 hoof to play for territory and look to only hurt them from set pieces.
Our lack of quality really showed. Every attack broke down when Doucoure got within 10 yards of the ball and Harrison offered nothing going forward. This allows teams to double up on
Ndiaye and nullify him (he got in the ball more in the 2nd half without really creating).
I'm hoping
Moyes stuck with a Dyche-esque starting line up (personnel wise) due to only having a couple of days worth of training with the squad beforehand and we'll see changes in the upcoming matches.
It's quite telling
Moyes' words were "we're desperate to get more quality in"... I'm hoping we can be as swift with our player signings as we were with manager appointment, it's not panic stations yet, but the number of games left will disappear very quickly and we can't rely on those below us to also not pick up points for long.
