David Moyes will chase young talent.

Not just us, there was a piece in the Telegraph about Ferguson doing the same sort of thing at United. Ribery being the example they chose, as they're not going for him as he's too old at 26 so won't have much of a resale value.

I agree mate but realisticly its the only way we can compete, we cant really afford to assmeble a squad at the high end of the market so we buy young and develop players in to quality international players.
Oh, I'm totally behind this idea.. to buy up and coming players and turn them into an international player, or at least a high competence player that has increased in value and playability. It has done us very well since Moyes took over and I think it will continue to do so.

But sometimes we might need to buy an established player just to get the up and coming ones a decent chance and not break them by giving them too much pressure.

What I'm afraid of is that if we don't start to rub off this "sell-as-soon-as-a-high-offer-comes" soon, it will become increasingly harder to do so. And I can't remember us turning down a large-money offer these last few years.

If you count away the few players that are faithful to one club their whole career even if offers come along to join a worldleading club, the player-type that get my highest regard is the youngster with a high ability that chooses to join a club on the rise and help that club become a great one.

We turned down big money from West Ham (remember when they had money?) for Johnson, Cahill and Arteta. Yes, we sold Johnson the following year, but that was a point when he wasn't wanted.

There have been rumours circulating about interest in our players constantly, and presumbly clubs have asked about availability. Maybe we haven't turned down an actual offer for Yakubu, but if Redknapp gave us a ring to ask if we would negotiate on him (or Arteta, or Cahill, or whoever - pick your own rumour) and we just said "not for sale", isn't that essentially the same thing as turning down a bid?

In fact, we haven't accepted a big money offer for a player we wanted since Rooney, have we?

Rumours will always be there... but I can't actually remember us turning down silly money for our players. But I'm sure you're right, don't remember everything.. it's summer and my brain is on vacation. :D

And I'm not counting a phonecall from another manager if a player is for sale to turn down silly money since there is no offer made.

You're the only one who, in the week Jackson died, thought that THIS thread was the one with the most potential for a peadophile joke.

Distant second.

Was making Jackson jokes on the first or second page of that thread, before it was edgy and cool.
