What's worse, some nasty words or physical abuse of a defenceless creature that can't stand up for itself?
If it was a dog no one would even question it.....
Don't get me wrong racism is vile but I'd rather have someone call me a name or make monkey noises at me etc, than slap me, volley me or throw me across the room...
Also you can report offenders who racially abuse you, who stands up for the animal?

Attitudes like that are why so many animals are abused...
Personally I think the punishments should be in line with the human equivalent...
After all, how many serial killers start off with animals?
