  • I always said the danger of the post-Moyes era would be we'd end up another club that recruited brainlessly. And we did.

To be fair Moyes did have 11 years to make said signings and to mould them into the players he wanted them to be. Nobody else will probably ever get that time. Obviously he didnt get much money but he did benefit in other ways.

Good poll @Groucho. I had to sit and think and I honestly reckon there are decent shouts for all of them, but I went for Cahill. As someone else pointed out, he just seemed to be there when we needed him. I wonder how much he was worth in his prime? Like, if United wanted him in 2007 or something, how much could we have got for him?

Anyway, Tim for me, the little Aussie/Samoan hero...

Should've included Pienaar in the poll in hindsight, but I personally would've still plumped, overall, for Baines.

Understand all the Cahill shouts obvs.

Arteta 2m (nearly didn't sign him as we were haggling over 500k)

Martyn 250k
Baines 6m
Coleman 60k
Jags 4m
Lescott 5m
Pinear 2m
Cahill 2m
Gibson 500k
Arteta 2m
Felliani 15m
Yakubu 11m

47.81m for that team of his signings ...

Not a bad team either ..

Don't really get the shouts for Martyn tbh. Yeah was a good keeper for a year or two - but ahead of someone like Baines? No contest.

A good keeper? He's the only keeper we have ever had that can be mentioned in the same sentence as nev..

As In

"Martyn is the bee we have had since southall"

Coleman, Cahill, and Jagielka (less so) reflect the best on him as a coach. They became far, far better players at Everton, and it's fair to say that their careers could have gone very differently had they not moved to Everton under Moyes. Coleman was raw as anything when he came over, it's not like we unearthed a ready-to-go prem right back from the LOI.

Arteta and Baines are just flat out talented, who you'd back to succeed anywhere, but even there he put them on the right track. Arteta in paticular was making a complete pig's arse of his career as I recall, in and out of the Rangers side, personality clashes with coaches in Spain etc.
