Dave Hickson

I don't know which season it was when my grandad first took me to Goodison, but I know Davy Hickson was in the team. I couldn't believe it when he left and went to Huddersfield.
I remember him signing autographs in Goodison Rd one day before a match one Wednesday afternoon, in the days before we had floodlights. I think it was when he was playing for Aston Villa, so, that'll tell you something about him.
Anyway, I found an empty cigarette packet in the gutter, ripped it open and he signed it for me.
I was like a kid at Christmas when he came back to Everton.
One of my less happy memories - only kidding - was watching him play for Liverpool. He was past his best by then and had
moved down to the second division. It was against Sheffield Utd and the only thing I remember about it was that Dave got sent off.
RIP Dave.

Very disappointing & surprising that there has still not been any mention of this on the Sky Sports News bulletins (apart from an on-screen caption) and still nothing on the BBC website despite Phil McNulty tweeting about it several hours ago.

This man was a total legend, who played for all 3 Merseyside clubs.

It was on SSN last night, with a picture and report.

Terribly sad news.

Only met him once but seemed a top guy, and was of course a legend on Merseyside.

RIP Dave.

Dixie, Hickson, Labone, Ball......

All gone to the heavenly Goodison, and clear examples of what this Club is all about.....

Sheer class. RIP

I was lucky enough to have met him and see him play, sadly at one of the meetings he was with Labby, they'll be chatting up stairs now.

He was a very graceful player, never dirty but he had a spark that could light up a match in an instant. I never saw him play top flight football but he was still a class act at Prenton Park. He continued playing into his sixties, as fit as a butchers dog. The most surprising thing about Dave was his totally genuine modesty, many footballers today could do with some of what he had in bucket loads. The Everton universe is emptier today, a sad loss RIP Dave Hickson, Merseyide Super Star and Blue Legend

Never had the good fortune to see him play, from all accounts a true gent and professional. God speed your boots Dave Hickson RIP

Met him a few times on the Goodison tour, a lovely gentleman.
R I P Dave an Everton legend.

I met him on a few occasions and I consider myself very priveledged to do so.

On the 1st occasion I was in the club store and Dave actually approached me to talk about the club, that was the sort of man he was, an Evertonian and a true gentleman.

After the Newcastle game at the end of the 04-05 season Dave got stuck at the lights on County Road outside the Oak trying to do a right turn towards the ground. In no time we all broke out singing 'there's only one Davie Hickson' and all jumped over the barriers to shake hands with him, he was very humble though slightly embarrassed.

A great man and Goodison won't be the same without seeing him from time to time.
