Fair point, bit of a pity we didn't see Besic tbh since Barry started to fade towards the end and was lucky to not get a red.

Just nervous about Gibson with his injury history, really want him to well this season.

same on both accounts, think we need to look at replacing barry's legs late on in such games. besic is still young and trying to make an impression though, so you'd prefer it to be gibson in such instances imo.

Martinez will be taking no risks with old glass knees as he has the ability to boss games with his engine and distribution - probably saving him as an option for the big boys

The problem of replacing either defenders or defensive midfielders towards the end of a game is that it can disrupt eveyones rhythm leading to a greater risk of a goal. Can see why Martinez often just subs a couple from the attacking four - less problems while they get up to the speed of the game and their extra energy forces the other team backwards ie less pressure on our tiring defensive line.

Agree if we are going to sub Barry, Gibson is the safer option. Pity we have two tough games coming up, would have been nice to have Besic start a game but given the importance of the fixtures and Barkley already out doubt he will.

based on today, barry might be suspended for chelsea ha. he'll be knackered following arsenal's quick attackers if we don't keep hold of the ball well.

i'm not sure if martinez brought coleman on as a RM, but if he didn't that's only twice i remember him making a negative sub to shut out a game and both times the oppo has scored. it should just be binned.

Was confused by that sub myself, wasn't sure if it was Stones or Coleman at RB - don't think they did either which is more of a problem. But thankfully Martinez is usually very good with his subs.

i presumed it would have been coleman RWB as part of a back 5, but we still seemed flat back 4 for the second goal, so presume he was put right mid. yeah martinez is alright with subs, like anyone he's going to make mistakes and like everyone, i accept that they're going to make them from time to time.

For the next two games, probably not mate. It worked well against Arsenal last season.
Each offers something a little different:

Barry - positional sense and reading of the game
McCarthy - human dynamo
Gibson - top class range of passing

Each attribute is obviously not exclusive but definitely strengths for each - the effectiveness of playing them in a 4-3-3 would likely hinge on the willingness of the front three to continually create space with their running

I think Mirallas-Lukaku-Mcgeady would best suit that formation.

A fit non lazy Lukaku definitely - would do well against Chelsea as the big man would be motivated and in full on beast mode

I long for the day bionic knee replacements are available so that we can bring back Gibson as a regular starter
