Yeah, I’m aware of the concept of the ‘racism of low expectations’. It’s not a new idea. I think it probably has some explanatory merit in some instances.

It is however, not the only game in town as far as racism is concerned, there’s also some pretty obvious, more direct prejudice against black people, which comes in many forms.

Additionally, the idea of groups of people having a victim mentality certainly isn’t limited to black people, as I said, there’s a whole white victim mentality playing out online, where white folk see any type of black representation in media or any perceived slight as ‘anti-white rhetoric’.

Yeah, it can definitely be used to divert attention. White supremacists marching with swastica flags and tiki torches, chanting “you will not replace us”, then saying ‘the real problem is the subtle racism of low expectations perpetrated by the libs’ does feel a bit disingenuous.

The low expectation point does have some merit though, and again is applicable across different groups, not just racial ones. It’s something you see in class terms as well, when people are patronisingly shocked to see a working class kid make good, or people are surprised that someone with a regional accent can string a articulate sentence together.
