I agree that we’d probably be having some buyer’s remorse with Potter. A lot of times, clubs want younger, splashy managers who are creative and relate more to the yoots.
But for every one diamond in the rough, there are a ton who are trying to make a name for themselves often at the expense of making the best choices and decisions every moment whether on the match or pitch.
This version of
David Moyes isn’t trying to create a name for himself anymore. He isn’t looking to manage beyond this club. He loves Everton and it took about 20 years to figure out what it means to be excellent and how to learn from past mistakes.
He’s wise. He’s parent-like but stern. Tells you when you’ve done great but knows how to properly teach without yelling like sadly Mikel and Pep. To be the best means taking what you have and demanding excellence and knowing how to move all the chess pieces all the time.
He doesn’t play favourites. No one was here then beyond Seamus, who’s near the end, and Baines, who’s an assistant. I’m grateful he’s here. Depending on whether you were around the first time with
Moyes or whatever your opinion was on who should manage, personally speaking I admire this version of him.
As an older guy myself, I’ve left companies that felt like family in order to grow my career and chase the money. Now, it’s about so much more. All the BS clears away the older you get and rarely do you get a second chance to do better. Moyes does.
I have no issue of him originally leaving Everton for better places. I guarantee most everyone in here has left a job. Was there a forum thread dedicated to you for being a traitor to your company? It’s because it’s the club we love that it felt personal.
Maybe you’ve broken up with someone. Gotten divorced. Said stupid sh—. For some reason, David Moyes doesn’t get a pass by most. He’s held to a standard most people would never hold themselves to.
I know he loved Everton and it felt like a family. But he also wanted to grow his career, too. Now he’s back again and he really knows what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
It used to be all about the excitement because he got the job he really wanted. It’s been replaced with determination because he’s got a job to do. Subtle but huge difference.
