I think @Woolly Blue would be more Machievellian about it - get the tradesman round, get cash price, refuse to pay but promise not to bubble him. Tradesman obviously must also provide details of his next victim.

Haha, I'm a bit weird, I don't really mind paying taxes. Our accountant thinks I'm bloody weird.

I did pay someone in cash, donkeys years ago,to put a new DPC in and tank the walls in an old house we were doing up. Took a few trips to the cash machine to get the money together.

The DPC failed about ten years later though
