After a ball had clipped Paine on the top edge of the thigh pad through to the keeper, the keeper and slips all react as if convinced he edged it through before sensibly not reviewing.

Kohli then says to Paine 'If you mess it up it's 2-0'

Paine replies 'You've got to bat first, big head'

At the close Australia are in a very healthy position at 132-4, 175 ahead and received a further boost with the news that scans have revealed NO serious damage to Aaron Finch's finger who may well resume first down tomorrow.

Even 200 will take some getting imo and Australia would probably be very comfortable with 250. They have Khawaja, Paine and probably Finch to come but the difference between the teams' late order batting is quite stark
(not a Mitchell Starc pun).

Even Jason Lyon at ten hasn't yet been dismissed and well before him they have Pat Cummins who is as solid a defensive bat as anyone, Mitchell Starc who has scored first class centuries which leaves only number eleven Hazlewood very likely to not trouble the scorers.

The best prices on offer reflect the situation with Australia 2/5 favourites and India 11/4

While there's Kohli there's always hope but they'll need to make big inroads early with the older ball, no reverse is ever likely with this lush outfield and any target batting fourth will also have added scoreboard pressure.

Possible they can rescue it but you have to think very unlikely.

WACA (Western Australia Cricket Association) lays blame at Cricket Australia for poor crowds....

Australian cricket's diminished reputation has contributed to mediocre crowd numbers for the Test against India in Perth, according to WACA chief executive, Christina Matthews. Matthews said the comparison between Test and BBL ticket sales suggested Australian international cricket was "on the nose" with fans, a situation made worse by Cricket Australia's handling of the subsequent inquiries.

The opening day for the first Test played at the new Perth Stadium had a crowd of 20,746 and over the first three days the total was 59,545.

"I don't think it's the team, I think Australian cricket as an entity is on the nose and a little bit of trust has been lost," Matthews told SEN radio.

"What happened in South Africa was kind of an insult to everybody and how they feel about the game. We follow that up a few months later with the cultural review and let's say the lack of foresight on Cricket Australia's part to see how the public was going to react to that. You live and learn. Don't forget we've got a World Cup and an Ashes series coming up in the winter and a reset in that sense.

"No doubt when we were planning for this a few years ago we would have hoped for 30-35,000 first day crowd, but we didn't expect the upheaval that was going to happen in cricket over the last nine months. That's obviously had an effect on Australian cricket and we know that because we know how well the BBL is doing in cricket sales and corporate hospitality - it is smashing everything.

"It's not happening in Australian cricket so there's obviously been an impact but I think as the team progresses, the result in Adelaide got people a little more sentimental about the team, and as the team improves that will come back again."

Just nice to be putting up a fight, christ we've sunk as a cricketing nation that its come to that kind of mindset

Doing more than that in this test they have every chance of going to Melbourne all square imo

I misquoted those odds, India are 14/5 not 11/4 and Australia 2/5 fav

There is Kohli who can always do something quite remarkable but he needs support and that huge tail means they can't afford failures amongst the other batsmen.

The commentary team doing the cricket in Austrailia is just horrible. They all wear headsets and are constantly smacking their lips into the mouthpiece.

Mark Waugh and Vaughn the main culprits. It's like listening to somebody eat down the phone.

Might sound petty but I'm forced to watch it on mute.

....... Double century for Tom Latham in Wellington. As I type he's currently 223 not out, the 13th-equal highest ever test score for New Zealand (only one Kiwi has ever scored a test match triple-century).

He ended up surpassing Alistair Cook's record for runs made in an innings by an opener 'carrying his bat'.
264 not out

Sri Lanka are a bit poo though

Yes Sri Lanka away from their spinning strongholds of Galle and Palakelle are a very weak side, they have beaten Australia and South Africa, but home and away are chalk and cheese.

With a side far suited to a virtually all spin attack on slow low big turning wickets giving no help to seamers even with the new ball, Sri Lanka normally prosper, away from home they're normally soft and don't have any real seamers now Malinga and Chaminda Vaas have retired from red ball cricket.

A very different and easy opposition away from Asia.

So far today Australia have taken a big step towards levelling the series going into the traditional Boxing day test at the MCG in Melbourne.

Scoring 242 was a real bonus, setting India an unlikely 287 to win but then capturing Pujara as one of two early wickets means that they're now heavily fancied to finish the job tomorrow.

Kohli is trying to repair the damage with Rahul and while there's Kohli there's hope.

However, there's also Nathan Lyon.

Vijay (not Rahul) and Kohli couldn't arrest the slide as Australia strengthened their already dominant position in the last session. By the close India had sunk to 112-5 and the match is all but over.

Nathan Lyon the very obvious danger was unsurprisingly the bowler who took the big wickets of Kohli and Vijay with Hazlewood chipping in by capturing that of Rahane to add to his earlier victim Pujara, Rahul was bowled Starc, an early breakthrough.

The purists all say pick your best bowlers and disregard their batting ability, but this can be taken too far. For India this match just continues to show valuable lessons not taken on board from their 1-4 reverse in England. Late order runs CAN win matches and bowlers who can bat can prove match winners. One of Ashwin or Jadeja has to replace a seamer regardless of the wicket.

Australia still have five wickets to take and should win some time tomorrow.

The odds once again have proved a far better guide throughout than the sometimes misleading 'WinViz' gizmo..

Australia available at around 1/28, India 14/1

There have been some unsavoury clashes between Kohli and Paine escalating rather than just continuing their contretemps from yesterday

The following is taken from cricinfo's version of events....

The fourth day witnessed heated conversations between the two captains, Tim Paine and Virat Kohli, in Perth as Australia were strengthening their grip on the match. During the wicketless first session, the captains even came into physical contact when Paine ran down the pitch for a single in the 71st over of the innings. As Paine nudged the first ball of the over towards midwicket for a run, Kohli ran towards the pitch in anticipation of collecting the ball and collided with Paine before the batsman could reach the non-striker's end. Even as Kohli collected the ball and made his way towards mid-on for the next delivery, Paine followed him for a couple of steps for a few words before umpire Chris Gaffaney interrupted to remind them they were the captains.

Kohli to Paine: "I'm not saying a word to you, why are you getting riled up?"
Paine to Kohli: "I'm fine. You're the one that lost it yesterday, why are you trying to be cool today?"
Chris Gaffaney: "Oi, that's enough, that's enough."
Paine: "We're allowed to talk."
Gaffaney: "Nah, nah, come on, play the game. You guys are the captains."
Paine: "We can have a conversation... there's no swearing, no..."
Gaffaney: "Tim you're the captain."
Paine: "Keep your cool, Virat!"

When Paine was walking off after being dismissed for 37 eight overs later, Kohli said a few more words that made the Australia captain turn around for a reply.

Kohli and Paine had earlier been recorded exchanging words after a caught-behind appeal against Australia's captain was turned down on the third evening. Walking past Paine, Kohli had remarked to his team-mates "If he messes it up, it's 2-0", moving Paine to retort "You've got to bat first, big head".

There may well be some disciplinary action taken against Kohli and Paine following this match

I know these tests where 300 is a good first innings score aren't for everybody, but I quite like them. I don't want to see 3 wickets falling in a day with 350 scored. This track was never easy and has become harder as the test has gone on, but we've seen with application you can make runs on it and equally you can get a ball with your name on - that's what test cricket should be imo.

For the series, it's good that Australia will almost certainly equal it as they head to the boxing day test at the MCG. There also seems to be a bit of needle in it, with Tim Paine being caught on microphone calling Kohli a big head.

I do think India need to add another recognised batsman though, their 4 man tail is too long when they're this poor against the new ball. It's a bit England-esque the way they're 2 down for about 10 every time, but unlike us, who bat down to 9, they bat down to 7 - so it's just not going to work if they keep it up.

---------------------------------------------------------

Sticking down under, I see New Zealand piled them on against Sri Lanka, who already look to be staring down the barrel at 20-3 still 276 behind.

Special mention for Tom Latham, who carried his bat making 2018's highest individual score of 264*. Very well played.
