Liam Livingstone has resigned from the captaincy of Lancashire.

He unfortunately has to as skipper but really the whole season was heavily disrupted by Jennings, Buttler and Jimmy on permanent England duty, as to be fair was Yorkshires too.

Now champions Surrey, what strength in depth too, have Sam Curran, Foakes and Rory Burns playing as well as Pope in the squad.

Surrey are an example to all and are doing everything right atm, how Lancs must envy them

Lancs have had a few young players playing the past couple of seasons. The likes of Bailey, Parkinson, Mahmood and indeed Livingstone himself hopefully will kick on in the future.

I'm not sure If I was him i would want to be playing in the second division at this stage of my career it will certainly harm his chances of progression and England as a rule just won't consider bringing him in as a debutant if not making first division runs

(Its ok being with Lancs if youre already established and on an England contract as per Jennings, Buttler and Jimmy, although Jennings not entirely safe)

You can see all the fuss the press makes at times about players doing well in the second division, but as with others anything achieved is hugely devalued and not really noticed.

Hopefully Lancs will and certainly should get promotion, but even one year is a real waste. Maybe he should be looking elsewhere and moving counties.

Possibly resigning the captaincy may be a step towards a move?

Nice post from a regular poster on a cricket site I frequent, he's out in Galle and has just posted this....

Hi, Well the Sri Lankans have been very friendly, nice touch having England and Sri Lankan flags in the streets. I was amazed when I arrived to see so many from England, absolutely outstanding attendance numbers as you have probably seen on the TV. So my plan of pitching up on day 1 and getting a ticket to a half empty stadium went right out the window, when I went to the ticket office last night, and the first 3 days are sold out. The first 4 now. Oh dear! So I turn up at the ground and its mega busy, Englands fans everywhere, lots without tickets, but of course there is the fort. I went up there, but didn't like it much, so came back down, play had started but I just walked around and asked everyone, got a ticket, got a ticket, and I stuck lucky as I got a tuk tuk guy who had one! So I got in after 40 mins play, so not too bad at all. It was a good day, as you know England rallied and batted well once they were 5 down. Anyway luckily the Tuk Tuk man got me a ticket for tomorrow as well! So pretty lucky really, I have spoken to loads without tickets. Tomorrows tickets includes lunch as well hahaha. Not sure about Day 3 or Day 4 yet though. But will cross that bridge later. It was actually quiet a quiet atmosphere considering the amount to English fans, I am sure, there will be a Jimmy Anderson roar tomorrow though. Everyone well behaved, good to see, a credit. Beer is £1.20 so you can imagine, a lot was drunk. Food cheap as well. So all the fake news was incorrect, tickets were only £1.50 !! Standing, and no rain! I paid a bit more for my ticket, but not bothered. Good day.

I see they've changed the rules on relegation/promotion again from 2020.

Ben Foakes century, followed by some smart glove work to dismiss Chandimal off the excellent Rashid must mean he's now taken over as keeper/batsman for the two tours of Sri Lanka and West Indies. He has plenty of experience of playing out here and as a batsman is known to be at his best against spin. He may now have the chance to make the gloves permanently his. Bairstow may now be looking at playing purely as a batsman and perhaps has eyes on that troublesome number three position, which possibly means Stokes or Buttler's place as three spinners just looks to be right and unchangeable.

As with England's innings, once the ball gets softer batting does get easier and a predictably better session for Sri Lanka was expected with their best batsmen in the middle order. Angelo Matthews we know all about and Dickwella has impressed with the bat all tour.

England are in a supremely dominant position but will likely find things tough after tea, they just need to keep it tight and not lose control.

This must be about the best Rashid has bowled for England with a red ball.

Ali and England getting Matthews out straight after tea a welcome bonus, one nil to England now looks almost certain.

This post from 'bluerinse' on TEF sums it up nicely

England haven't had many days as good as that away from home in recent years.

We knew the score England made was half decent, but to then go and take Sri Lanka out in 2 sessions was even better...

The new ball bowlers got it up and running which always helps and then the spinners bowled really well; Leach and Moeen were naggingly accurate and Rashid gives the skipper a bit of magic, even if he can be a bit more expensive.

Jennings and Burns started nicely second innings, so now it's all about building a huge lead and hopefully (weather permitting) baking the track so it gets unplayable for the Sri Lankans batting last on it.

Oh and I thought Foakes kept nicely as well, very slick.

Sri Lanka started favourites but look how its now standing

Sri Lanka 11/1, Draw 14/1, England 1/9

Was frustrated to see him bowl half the overs of his fellow spinners (who both also bowled well), you just get the impression that apart from eoin morgan, the rest of english cricket seem to be waiting for him to fail and get him out of there. I think his talent and variation warrants giving him a proper go and not panicking at the first bad over, it may not work out but it's worth looking at

He was absolutely excellent, he's still learning in red ball cricket but now is showing far more control with his stock ball and landing it properly. Has the variations with the big magic ball, really puts some revs on it too and the googly going the other way. Also learning to adjust his pace well giving it enough air to grip and spit out from any rough.

I think Root was captaining to standard practice at times and leg spin is far more difficult to bowl well and tidily for long periods. Hence the two off spinners Ali and left armer Leach can bowl longer spells keeping it tight and under control with Adil being used in shorter bursts as a strike spinner as well as cleaning up the tail.

One of the main objections was after Adil got Chandimal out stumped he was whipped off and replaced immediately but it's possibly mitigated by the usual success off spinners like Ali get to left handers, so possibly a plan, left hander comes in then get Ali on.
