Cover Versions

Good thread, but I can't see 90% of the embedded videos just the link in html. Wish the convention was to actually name the song rather than just posting the video!

Cover songs are interesting, I hate it when bands (usually down to some music mogul) produce a safe, easy-money facsimile version. The best covers are the ones that take the original in a different direction.

Some mentioned The Lizards - Money. Paul Young did a version of Love Will Tear Us Apart on No Parlez (though I was never enamoured with the original). Tainted Love by Soft Cell re-invents the song. Was listening to the original of It's In His Kiss earlier, the Cher version is the best one.

For a band it is best finding an obscure track and covering that, more chance to surprise people.

This has always been one of my favs.

Mostly because it was so unexpected when I came across it!

There are some great covers out there. Many do exceed the level set by the original. Some bring songs that you'd not considered or hadn't heard into your psyche.

Clem Snide - barely heard of American alt-country duo. Take a pure bred pop song and turn it into something well.....beautiful

Without a doubt, this is one of my favourite tracks of all time.

...and then an artist can take one of your favourite songs and make it so much better.

We had the lyrics from Such Great Heights read out at our wedding. It is this version that I think of first. He has superseded The Postal Service here, no doubt.

The stranglers walk on by.johnny cash hurt.i thought gwen stefani did a good job with its my life. Someone mentioned jeff buckley covering the smiths I know it's over.ive never heard his version but hed have to go some way to better the stunning original

Just found this thread. Some great stuff. One of my favourite covers is Isaac Hayes doing Jimmy Webbs By The I Get To Phoenix.

There's also a cover I discovered recently which is different enough but still amazing that I can listen to the original and cover together without feeling like I've listened the same song twice. The song is Vapour Trail with the original by Ride, and this beautiful cover by Trespassers William:

Summer Breeze - The Isley Brothers originally written and recorded by Seals & Croft

Sailing - Rod Stewart originally written and recorded by the Sutherland Bros

Dear Prudence - Beatles covered by Siouxsie and the Banshees

Got to get you into my Life by the Beatles covered by Earth Wind & Fire

Ride Like the Wind by Christopher Cross - cracking heavy version by Saxon
