Frank Turner singing Ben Marwoods cover of The Postal Service - District Sleeps Alone Tonight

Covers can be better.

Credence Clearwater Revival - I heard it through the grapevine

Johnny Cash did an album of really good covers.

Radio 1's live lounge did some good covers

Robbie Williams does a suprisingly decent 'There she goes'

Oasis - I am the Walrus is immense

The La's - that'l be the day

Time Burgess - Somewhere in my heart

I'm inclined to agree that, with some exceptions, originals are better than covers. A good exception is Metallica with 'Loverman' (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) and indeed their cover album, Garage, Inc. It really is worth a listen and is also where you can find Ijjy's earlier example of 'Turn the Page'.

Someone mentioned earlier All along The Watchtower and I fully agree. Paul Weller with both 'Wishing on a Star' and 'Early Morning Rain' (from his covers album) are also good.

The Clash and GnR songs are not a patch on the originals.

This is correct. I'd even go as far as calling the GnR version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" a complete butchery.

This has got to be one of my favourite cover versions, The Charlatans (original US psychedelic band, not the UK "Madchester" band) version of Buffy Saint-Marie's "Cod'ine":

If you remember the original of a song, is a cover version ever as good as the original in your eyes ?

As much as I like the Paloma Faith cover of Never Tear Us Apart, it just made me listen to the Original.

I normally prefer an original to a cover version but Phil Collins version of "you can't hurry love" is way better than Diana Ross's original.

Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of foxy lady is good. I think I prefer it to the original. I have vague recollections of seeing Travis on the telly at Glastonbury doing a cover of 'Hit me baby one more time' and thinking it was pretty good.
