From my view, unlikely to be prosecuted/fined where outside one's control to comply with testing requirements certification etc.

HOWEVER duty of care still applies, and you would probably be liable for damage caused by a fault that a reasonable owner/driver would have been aware of.

It is not carte blanche to drive a dangerous vehicle.
That's what MOTs are for.....as long as your car drives ok and you know it has breaks and good steering etc I assume commonsense prevails in this situation....

Ah, a representative of the "it can't be done, economic sense" brigade. Glad to see coronavirus didn't kill all you lot off.

Just as an aside though - I didn't advocate raising taxes; in fact I said it was politically and financially impossible.

Offshore wealth however is something that has to be the source of any money for this economic recovery; firstly and most importantly that wealth is being protected by all the measures that are being taken so it is not unfair at all to ask them to pay for this service. Secondly, as we saw after 2008-9 lot of it is going to be coming back into the economy so they can buy up the wreckage (or "wealth-create" as you would probably call it). Finally, and this is especially true of the UK, a lot of it is offshore in name only - it relates to assets that are actually here.
Since 2016 there's been an agreement between over 120 countries (including most 'offshore' governments) that has led to the automatic international provision of information on all capital assets and income held by non-residents in those countries. Don't know how much additional revenue has been forthcoming for HMRC though as a result.

But would also lead to the exit of most financial institutions, hundreds of thousands of job losses -- and ultimately a shortfall in tax revenues. The sort of 'unintended consequences' that many on here are criticising the government for in the current crisis.

The financial institutes wouldn't exit London, it's a constant red herring designed to frighten the children. Transaction tax, like other taxes, are always portrayed as a big 'no, it will hurt business'.

Just tried to get a refund for my holiday - Even though I purchased cancellation protection, apparently the insurance company won't pay out in instances of 'enforced government travel restrictions'?!

Are you having a f'ing laugh?!
My mum had been told by her travel agent that they have to finish paying for their holiday before they can get a refund on it!

Obviously they are keeping their options open because they still plan to send them to Turkey if possible , considering its June they are meant to fly there ain't any chance of it going ahead.

Have you actually thought about the complications of administering such a scheme ?

It’s not as simple as opening the bank vault and chucking some money about.

It is horrendously complex - thats why going down the government paying or guaranteeing mortgage / rent payments during this crisis route would have been far easier and cheaper than this. Once you take out as much of most peoples weekly spending as possible (which is usually housing costs and transport) it probably would be possible for people to live on SSP even at its current rate.

It would also be far simpler to run too - you just give or more likely loan the banks money for the mortgages and landlords for the rent (edit: both sets of information should be already with the banks and/or the state). Anyone who owns their own house doesn't get a payment above SSP.

So Barclay in the commons, can't give a date about when the self employed will get real help. Typical announcement politics Tories always announcing this or that but can never give a date when it will be implemented. Just like starter homes - announcement politics than delivered zero, zilch in 10 years. These clowns are making the country more anxious than is necessary.

I've spoke to a fair few people who have said that Johnson and the Tories deserve huge credit how they've handled things up to now...I just stood there gob smacked that someone could actually think this.

Transaction tax needs only one country in the world not to have a transaction tax and it's a total failure.

Good; time to see that knowledge put to work then. Lets face it there is nowhere else in the economy where this money could ever be found.

I can't even....

Fully understand the point of the host there , completely right.

If a 75 year old woman isn't arsed about dying though then who is anyone else to tell them otherwise?

I guess the other side of the argument, which will be in its minority certainly is that elderly may not care if they don't want to spend their days stuck in the house in fear of a virus. If she doesn't care about getting the virus then let her move about and die. I'd be more heavy on those who probably wouldn't die from it doing the same.

Are you seriously suggesting that such a levy would not hurt business? That would only be so if every other financial centre in the world followed suit. Service provision is the most globally mobile of all economic activity.
