If that's what happens, the upshot will be that he loses his "status" as a man unencumbered by any person or institution or orthodox code. If he's contrite, his "aura" flies out the window and he's lessened.

He knows it, and if he does come across like that it's a measure of just how much of a mess he's got himself and the government in.

The beginning of the end for him, either way now.
