Corners

Biggest improvement on corners this term is that Bobby doesn't insist on everyone coming back to defend 'em.

So why doesn't he mix it up with a few short corners? Not usually a fan of them but can't remember one all season. Even throw one or two in just to keep the defense guessing. Also a better chance of keeping possession

Lescott and Cahill scored probably 20 goals between them right before he(Lescott) went to city from corners. It's such a huge difference. Even the defending makes me nervous where as two years ago I wouldn't even be bothered if we conceded a corner.

May I ask how you know this mate?

He actually said it mate.

“I always believe that a goal from open play is a more satisfying goal,” said Martinez. “The hardest thing in football is to break a team down when everyone is behind the ball. A free-kick or dead ball situation is less in your control. But you are relying more on the bounce of the ball or people switching off or doing their duties.

“Dead-ball situations are a big part of the game, don’t get me wrong. But you are a winning team when you don’t rely on set-pieces and I do prefer open play goals – I’m not going to hide it.”

Its all down to delivery, how many times do you see baines, del boy fail to beat the first man

Random. Cheers though.

Where's that from?

That's ok. Thanks.

Bloody weird though.

Why not score beautiful goal AND snot some headers from corners hey?

It's his philosophy, can't really do much about it, even if I disagree with him.

Personally I think our style of play is suited to outswinging corners, looking to gain the second ball if half cleared, work it wide and take advantage of a scrambling defence. But what we see at the moment is a manager who doesn't believe in set pieces, so the players reflect that.

same with most free kicks not close to the goal, we wont whip them in, we play them short.

Man Utd have won many league titles with there center backs getting important goals from headed corners,

I don't think corner practise should be a huge priority, bus FFS I want to set something on fire every time one of corners doesn't even beat the first man.

I'd rather we just played them short most the time.

All of our corners go to the front post yet we don't ever have any one the front post, seems a bit daft to me.

Yeah Martinez isn't a fan of goals from corners, says its just an opportunity to lose possession. I agree with him in a sense that we shouldn't be overly focused on corners but geez if you can't get 1 goal out of 10 corners there is something wrong. I'm pretty sure we've had games at 10+ corners and not a single goal which is just wasteful. Every corner, every freekick is an opportunity and we could have used some extra goals this season.

agree with him to an extent. i mean, us fans want to be entertained, i don't find liverpool attractive to watch but if we focused purely on set pieces like they'd do then we wouldn't have scored so many cracking goals like we have this season. at the end of the day it's a result's business though, quite simply we don't have the personnel to be threatening from corners/set pieces.

if martinez sees it as an opportunity to lose possession, he should prioritize the short corner routine, because that's the only way we can about corners imo.
