As they only have 10 countries in CONMEBOL they always invite 2 teams from elsewhere so they can have 3 groups of 4. Top 2 in each group and 2 best 3rd place teams then advance to the Quarters.

Admittedly the invited teams are usually from Central or North America but clearly this time they decided to go in a different direction. Who knows why?!

I read this in the paper the other day actually. Apparently Asian teams were the only option this year as N American teams have the Gold Cup to focus on and African teams are busy with something or other (can't remember what).

African Cup of Nations is in the Summer this year for the first time so that makes sense.
