Sorry Dave but it's not. How many players voluntarily retired from international football 30 years ago? There's a reason why loads have done so in the last 2 decades while continuing to play club football to a high level. Club football is more important now.
It's more important for cash, that's all. I bet no WC winner would ever swap their winners medal for half a dozen CL winning ones. Never in a million years. It's the pinnacle of football.
The question isn't about what is more important it is about quality. Wanting to win the World Cup more doesn't mean players don't put in maximum effort for their clubs.
Patriotism comes into play there though and clouds the issue. Los of players have been slated for not singing the national anthem with enough enthusiasm.
