Conspiracy theories

How do certain human events happen? Things ranging from the Gulf of Tonken incident to altering of emissions tampering, all have 'winners and losers', all done for the benefit of a few at the cost of many.
For those who instantly dismiss 'theories' it's usually because not accepting the narrative undermines their entire world view and would make them question too much.

For a couple of reasons... firstly the world clearly runs on cock up rather than conspiracy and nobody has half a clue what they're doing most of the time.

Second, most of these theories would require a never broken code of silence across nations, levels of government, of society etc. etc.

Obviously conspiracies exist; otherwise you all owe a whole lot of Guy Fawkes effigies an apology. But oftentimes conspiracy theories are based on an unstated assumption of a hyper-competent network of evildoers working as one.

How much hyper-competence have you observed in the world recently, public or private?

This is why I mentioned the problem with the bats**t theories harming the few genuine conspiracies out there earlier.

Yes the overwhelming majority are down to people with over-active imaginations and too much time on their hands.

On the flip side you have things like Cambridge Analytica, Edward Snowden, Paradise Papers (that’s a rabbit hole!), the protection of Saville/Cyril Smith etc. By the authorities and even the MP’s expenses scandal to a degree.

It isn't about competence but intent. If you knew how easy it is to sway and coerce human behaviour then you wouldn't ask that question. Go from a Nuremberg rally to the Witch trials of Salem to the J&J baby powder sales in the Middle East or Cambridge Analytica and see how easy it is to create elected scenarios.
After all, religion is still a pretty big business and that has convinced billions of people of its legitimacy when it's a provable sham. ;)

Which exists. Do you think it incompetence, coincidence or convenience that Theresa May 'lost' so many files on high level nonces?
