Beyond the question of how just exactly how hard jelavic and osman have worked to earn their place when they never get dropped, surely the first 45 minutes answered that question.

You pick your best team and that's Lukaku and McCarthy. It's cowardice to not drop players just because they won. A good manger has to be ruthless.

We gave west ham a 45 minute head start and it's to martinez' credit that we managed to win anyway but it's still not desirable to do so.

What's the problem with both praising him for the half time switch and saying he made a mistake with his starting line up?

You miss the point if 2 newbies swan in on rep alone the number of noses out of joint (and rightly so) and possible festering could well outweigh the trial period of 45 mins - think he covered all the bases, handled the individuals, the squad and got the result no lingering feuds and a glorious win to boot.

Really don't see your gripe from a managerial stand point.

RM got the starting 11 well wrong. Maybe tho being new and preaching about squad players earning there place, at this stage he had to do it. Give him longer and I don't see that happening.

Lose a battle to win a war!

You don't change a team that had a good game against Chelsea and ended up with the win. Everyone knows that the starting 11 wasn't our highest in quality but starting poorly and changing at half time meant that we won the game, mainly because of the completely re-invigorated team for the final 45 minutes.

Yes you do when u have a quality squad, with better players available. At this stage of his tenure maybe not tho. In some ways he's still trying to sell himself to the players!

Utd have done it for years, go out and beat a Real Madrid, and have 5 different players staring the next game.

Rubbish!

The reason why the so-called Golden generation of England players failed to win anything was because even when out of form they would play. Football is all about squads and FORM, not just the 11 most gifted players.

Osman and Jelavic aren't in form though. They've been complete ****e for ages now.

Eh? Osman had a good game last week and Jelavic got an assist with a belting header....

Wheres your logic?
Osman had a shocking first half followed by an alright second half and Jelavic was useless bar that header.

After 30 seconds of the second half Lukaku had already contributed more than Jelavic did the whole first.

disagree mate.

Osman had a dodgy opening 10 and then had a decent game - one which was described as outstanding alongside Barry by Roberto Martinez.

Jela set up our goal and looked lively. Im not saying he is better than Lukaku, and im not saying that Osman is better than Gibson nor McCarthy.

What im saying is that it was total understandable to keep the same side who beat Chelsea 1-0. Its testament to Martinez that he reacted quickly when it was obvious it wasnt working.

If Martinez had changed it from the beginning, and it had gone pear-shaped for whatever reason - then people would have quite rightly questioned why he changed an in-form and winning starting 11.

Where's the poll thread gone with the % overwhelmingly for some guy from Porto! Haha

Yeah I'd like to read some of that back. In fact I remember you shooting me down for wanting Martinez! Tho to be fair I think you switched sides more often than Nicolas Anelka in that thread
