Conceding from set pieces

West Brom- McAuley header from a corner.
Southampton- Ramirez header from a corner.
Liverpool- Suarez header from a freekick.
Fulham- Howard own goal from Ruiz's freekick.
(Sunderland- Johnson goal in second phase following a corner).
Reading- Fondre header from a freekick & a penalty.

That's 6 out of 16 (not including S'land) or 37.5% of our goals conceded from set pieces.

Of the other goals that we've let in:

El Ahmadi and Ba (twice) went straight down the middle.
Long and Kone beat Jagielka to the ball at the near post after moves down our right.
Di Santo and Hoilett caught us on the counter-attack.
Saurez and Sidwell scored on the far post after the ball came across goal.

So goals from setpieces have been at least twice as common as any other source.

Jags needs a decent partner Distan iffy -JH pure rubbish with no height so why not try young Duffy who last season had a number of games & should never have been dropped 6-2 commanding in the air DM has to try hin sooner than later our defence must be the smallest in the prem!

Without Fellaini we're probably the smallest team in the prem.

I think we all prefer the more expansive way moyes is setting us up to play. This does unfortunately mean that some of our other positives are not quite as strong. Someone in another thread was saying we should keep PN out and pay barkely. This is ok so long as you are willing to take the negative on the other side in that we would not be as defensively strong.

We are making choices.

Since Heitinga has come in for Distin I think we've only conceded one header from a set piece, so I wouldn't put it down to a lack of height. I think we're just not as organised and switched on as we could be.

This. It's not as if we're getting outmuscled or out jumped. It's just poor marking. We don't need taller defenders on Suarez and Le Fondre, for example.

You might be right. I just think it could help having a player who's dominant in the air at the back.

Moyes said after the game that the problem is that we're not scoring enough goals. Did the Spurs side of Klinsmann and co or Newcastle with Asprilla win anything? If we need to get 3 goals per game to take the points then we're going to be disappointed. We could have left the Madjeski today with a 1-0 if we'd defended properly.

He has a point, where at 1-0 we needed another goal and couldn't get it.

It doesn't excuse the defending, but I think it's a valid point.

Title-winning teams don't give a lot away. They'll take a 1-0 but if they can get more goals to make the game safe without risking what they've got, they'll take them. Maybe we're being too adventurous if we're dominating teams so much?
