Folks online are saying 'treat it like a 2d Minecraft'

Might be worth you checking out Rimworld. Simple looking colony simulator that is incredibly complex if you want it to be @Tubey can attest to that, iirc.

I'm actually increasingly coming to the conclusion that Rimworld is the best game I've ever played. It's in the top five for sure.

It's so good that it makes me grumble at games that don't have emergent storytelling as a feature.

Yeah, have actually known about that game for quite a while, having seen a fair few vidoes on that and Prison Architect. Weirdly something about the look of the game doesn't appeal to me. Might pick it up at some point tho, especially if it's in a sale and try it out.

Is it already playable, on a decent level? I thought it was still in the early access stadium.

It's a no from me.

It's as complete a game as 99% of other games and has 10000x more content than most - the sole reason it's in early access is because the developer is apparently a perfectionist.

Thank you! I think I'll buy it tonight.

Have to say; living through these sorts of things sounds hilarious to me:

"WTF just actually happened?
I'm used to a lot of BS, my last colony died because half of them went crazy during forming a caravan, beating the other half and then the mechanoids wiped us out. It's okay it happens...

Now I started a Rich Explorer scenario, got an escape pod, healed the guy, fed the guy, but I didn't accept him as colonist.

So he wakes up, walks around, then TAKES MY ONLY WEAPON AND LEAVES.
What the hell?

It's like day 3, so I'm not even salty, but how can this even happen? What is the point of this?"

That's basically what makes the game incredible; emergent storytelling. Random things happen constantly - it's like the Neverending Story if it was a survival game in space. For example:

I actually rage quit Rimworld a few weeks ago, or I'd be well in excess of 200 hours.

The reason? I had a raid, and they decided to attack a wall instead of the usual way they go. So I moved my colonists to them to get a good shot - there was only two of them so I thought "just go as a group and gun them down".

Obviously I didn't check what weapons the raiders had. Big mistake. One threw a grenade, killed eight colonists at once. Pure rage.
