Here's what I have - not really played games enough to be honest to warrant making any changes in the past few years

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz

Mobo: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO

RAM: 16GB GSkill Sniper DDR3 1600

GPU: AMD EAH6950/2DI2S/2GD5 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5, 6970 Overclock

PSU: Corsair RM 750

Cooling: Noctua NH-D14, plus 3x 120mm on case

HDDs: Samsung Evo 512GB SSD, 3x WD 2TB Black, 1x WD 2TB

Case: CM Storm Scout. Also have a Lian-Li PC-S80 in the basement that I snagged for $50 on Craigslist

Ok. Anything bold is going to be kept.

I recommend you create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Put all the above components in.

Then on CPU MOBO and GPU leave blank.

As you don't need any other kit.

The excel file allows you to put prices in and URLs per supplier before ordering (e.g. Amazon/Newegg etc)

Now we firstly have to get you a decent MOBO + GPU. Plus then with around 40-50% of the budget a GPU.

The mobo needs to have multiple free PCI-e lanes that allow SLI configuration. You only need one GPU right now but you future proof by having the ability to add in another GPU later when cash is available.

The Noctura NH-D14 is compatible with Intel LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA775 & AMD AM2, AM2+, AM3 (backplate required)

This will dictate what GPU and MOBO you can get unless you also want to get a new cooler. Liquid cooling is easy these days with a off the shelf design. Unless you want to keep the Noctura.

I had the Noctura NH-C14 Intel until I switched to the Corsair H110i GTX but that is way overkill plus case size needs consideration along with air flow.

The NH-D14 will be LGA1150 and LGA1151 compatible - so you could consider a SKYLAKE processor. Due out in a couple of months.... Or a Haswell processor now also.

The following coolers are thus compatible with LGA1150 out of the box and don’t require any upgrades in order to be used on this platform: NH-C12P SE14, NH-C14, NH-D15, NH-D14, NH-L12, NH-L9i, NH-U14S, NH-U12S, NH-U12P SE2, NH-U9B SE2. In addition, all older models which have been upgraded with the NM-I3 kit can also be used on LGA1150 without any further upgrades.

I'd also buy a couple of cans of compressed air.

Before you do the upgrades you should use this opportunity to do a big dust clean.

Literally as you are going to be taking things apart. You also need to be aware of Static discharge. If your not familiar with handling kit (memory modules, CPU and GPUs and the like) get one of the wrist bands you attach to the case.

If I were you I would not rush into ordering anything. Take a couple of weeks.

This way you get the best build at the best price list.

I wanted something in this weekend, but maybe you're right that cleaning shop and potentially even waiting for Skylake is a better option - perhaps even ready for Black Friday deals over here

Yes mate. Wait a couple of weeks or so. As soon as Skylake comes out the Haswell chips will lower in price as well. So its worth it.

Plus too many people rush in. If you're methodical and plan the upgrade properly you'll get the most out of it.

Create the excel file and get a few ideas together then let me see in a few days or so.

Skylake announcement then searching pulled up this one - am I missing something?
 
Yep, they have the i7 here too - surprising how the price in the UK is basically the same as what I'd pay here in dollars though, madness

My confusion from before was that it looked like Skylake had only just been announced, but then it was already available

In terms of bang for buck, the 6600K is one of the best available. The 6700k is clearly a better processor, but you have to pay for the privilege. You lose hyperthreading, 2MB of Intels 'Smart Cache' and some clock speed, but you save over $100 with the 6600k.

So long as you get a decent motherboard and a cracking gfx, the cpu won't matter so much, unless mega processor intensive tasks are in your future (video processing being the main one for consumers these days), I would save the money and go 6600k
