However, also -
Not trying to be a bell, but CD Projekt Red are one of the only studios out there that actually give a damn about gamers, want to give you value for money and are driven by creative goals over financial ones. So I can't in good spirit endorse their game's piracy. I get that games are expensive -- too expensive -- but this if you buy one game this year, this deserves to be it
In short, it's 100x better than Skyrim. You can follow the story quite easily but you'll get lost with everything else you can do. However they streamline it nicely; side quests are actually inventive, fun and often humourous, not 'Fedex Quests' like most other WRPGs, as I heard someone brilliantly say. Combat is better than Skyrim's and the storytelling is on another level too.
Honestly depends what you don't like about Skyrim though. It being too unfocused? I think this has a clearer focus on the main goal and far more meat on its bones in that regard. Also from what the reviews have said, it seems to justify its open world better than most open world games (I'm looking at you, LA Noire/Mafia 2).
OH GOD LA NOIRE
Anyway, I eventually buy them, just very rarely on release really, because of the price. Plus I do it as a "test drive" and then when/if I like it and buy it - I'd know for what easy things to go from the start and stuff and make it slightly easier for myself.
You've basically summed up what I don't like about Skyrim there (plus the fighting is just poop), so I might give this a bash next week/month/we'll see! Also I knew I'd get a pretty nice and detailed response from you, like lol
I only bought it as they offered me Witcher 1 and 2 for £1 each in the pre-order last week.
Think that is amazing value if you add in the third game for total of £52.
I don't agree with pirating either when they offer genuine deals. Games are expensive but have to say the quality of game from them is top notch.
Not some of the absolute tripe you see sometimes allowed on STEAM by fake developers.
Early access my arse. Some of them are just genuine scams and shouldn't be on STEAM
I put well over a hundred hours into Skyrim, to be fair, but I remember thinking to myself at one point: "wait? What the hell am I doing? When was this last fun?" after looting the billionth corpse, after striking them down with a repetitive and floaty combat animation, in yet another samey looking cave.
Skyrim's characters were poor, the story was poor, most of the quests were poor and the combat was poor. The Witcher excels in the first three of these categories, and though the combat is something people disagree on, I think most will agree it's a step up from Skyrim. In my opinion the combat is awesome, though not quite as slick as something like Shadow of Mordor, or my personal favourite (WRPG combat-wise), Kingdoms of Amalur. It's tactical and meaty though; the very opposite of Skyrim's combat.
Where Skyrim excelled was the size and depth of its world. You couldn't walk very far without finding something interesting to distract you. The world building was phenomenal (koff Bobby). And TW3 seems to equal that at worst. The world is even bigger, and so far it seems like there's a crazy amount of stuff in here to find. Quests pop up all over the show in organic ways, and it's easy to get lost.
I will say make sure you give it a chance. I've played prior games so it didn't take me longer than an hour to get back into it, but newcomers should have patience. Because your patience will be rewarded!
Early Access is an absolute horror show. But that's it, value. To me value isn't just how many hours it takes, rather how many hours the devs have put into it; i.e., the quality.
I'd rather play an ace 6-8 hour game than a turgid 100 hour one. But every now and then you a beautiful convergence of quality and quantity; and I doubt there's a finer example of that than The Witcher 3!
Immersion is key. This thing is so big. DLC will make it bigger. Its like exploring a world.
Very rare you get games like this. Takes me back to the 1980's and some of the original RPGs then with the sliding screens.
Its what people want genuine characterisation.
Couldn't tell mate, honest. That's a really good point. One of the strengths of the Witcher is that you're not playing as some blank, silent protagonist; you're playing as Geralt of Rivia. He's a rich and interesting character, and the characters you meet have depth too. The decisions you make aren't simple binary "right vs wrong" affairs, but have nuanced consequences.
So yeah, if anyone's not sure, I really like this game....

Genuinely didn't think a lot of people had played Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I played it a while ago and it was boss, never finished it though.
And yeah agree on Skyrim, pretty much same here. I even bought it and everything on Steam a while ago, have played like 3 hours before getting bored of it and not even going very far in the quest line...
Will give TW1/2/3 a go over summer or something probably!
Definite 7/10, like.
Oh I'm only just starting but its a sold 9 from me.
I've seen some absolute TRASH being sold on Steam for £30 or £40.
This thing is in a entirely different level to them.
One tip. Turn off motion blur. It gives you a headache after a while and I don't think looks right. Its too blurry.

Mortal Kombat X Review
Took a while to write this as I struggled to think of a rating
Personally around a 4 or 5 for me. Just don't like it. All it made me do was want to break out older versions.
Graphics don't make a game, and exorbitant DLC certainly doesn't either.
